Upcoming in North Lake country

The following events and programs are taking place over coming days and weeks in the North Lake country.

•First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown's Second Saturday Series presents the production "Puah's Mid Wife Crisis," on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, at the church, 100 Church St., in Youngstown.

When Pharaoh decides to kill all male Hebrew children, the midwives must find a way to save them. Directed and accompanied by Claudia Andres, "Puah's" is an original musical presented by an all female cast. It features Kelsey Jeffs, Sue Collyer, Amy Freiermuth, Debby Coutts, Madi Yaronsky, Heather Yaronsky, Carol Rogers, Peggy Nash, Hannah Barner, Hailey O'Connor, Alyssa Vitch, Katie Kiely, Melanie Grabec, Aileen Roth and Sandy Maslen.

Show times are Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Free will donations accepted.

•The Town of Newfane Historical Society will hold its annual Apple Blossom Festival Sunday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the historical museum grounds, West Creek and Ide roads, Newfane.

Fun for the whole family, the event will feature a vast assortment of displays, demonstrations, special crafters, a Civil War encampment, live music in the gazebo, plenty of foods, a flea market, and more. Free admission and free parking.

•The Ladies Auxiliary of the Pekin Volunteer Fire Co. presents its "Spring Into Summer" raffle Sunday, May 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the fire company, 3024 Upper Mountain Road in Sanborn. Tickets are $20 per person and $5 per guest. Tickets include the opportunity to enter raffles, win door prizes and enjoy lunch and refreshments. •The Pekin Volunteer Fire Co. also will hold a firefighter exploring open house, Sunday, May 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the fire hall, 3024 Upper Mountain Road. Open to boys and girls ages 14 to 21 years old, the program introduces Exploring - a fun career and hobby program. Youth participants will gain insight on firefighting, first aid, as well as leadership skills, life skills, being a good citizen and more, all while having fun with their peers. •Florist John Taylor will be teaching a May centerpiece arrangement class on Wednesday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Shoppe On Main, 2714 Main St. (Route 78) in Newfane. •Artist and registered art therapist Katie Foley will teach kids' art classes at Shoppe On Main. Geared for children ages 8 to 15, the next session will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. •The fourth annual Wilson Community Day will take place on Saturday, May 21, at Wilson Town Hall, 375 Lake St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents will be able to sign up their children for Summer Recreation 2011; the Niagara County Sheriff's Office will be on hand to do child ID and car seat safety checks, and Fidelis Care will provide information on health insurance for qualifying applicants. In addition, the U.S. Postal Service will provide passport processing; Wilson Community Enhancement will have information on the upcoming 5K race; details will be available about Linnea's pool swim instructions/movie schedule and Harbor Hoops; and the U.S. Border Patrol will be on hand to answer any questions.

•The 39th annual Wilson Historical Society Memorial Day Fair will take place on Monday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair, presented by the non-profit Wilson Historical Society will be held on the museum grounds on Route 425 in the Town of Wilson. The American Legion will hold a special flag raising ceremony at noon on the museum grounds.

Included will be a super flea market with more than 250 vendors, and free entertainment by the Bar-Room Buzzards; an antique car museum also will be open and a special section for the display of antique and collectible cars on the grounds will be available with dash plaques for those that participate.

Expected foods include a Chiavetta's chicken barbecue, hot dogs, funnel cakes, cotton candy, homemade pies, sno-cones, coffee and doughnuts, lemonade, soft drinks, bottled water, plus other goodies.

The Museum Depot will be open for visitors with exhibits and displays provided. The Caboose, Fittro Shop, Schoolhouse and the Tugwell Cabin will all be open to the public.

•Dog trainer and Westminster handler Karen Drumm will be holding two classes at Shoppe On Main, 2714 Main St., in Newfane. Included is "Puppy Socialization," on Saturday, June 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. This class is for puppies, ages 10 weeks to 1 year, and their owners. The fee for this class is $3, and you must pre-register by calling 778-5273.

"Pick a Puppy: how do choose the right dog for you and your family" will be offered on Wednesday, June 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class is offered at no cost to participants. For further information, visit www.ShoppeOnMain.com.

•The 2011 Barker Farmer's Market opens its weekly sales with "Farmers and Fleas and the Barker Jazz Band" on Thursday, June 16.  Vendors, musicians and new ideas for the weekly happening are sought. For more information, contact Jo Ann at 795-3787.
