Reagan Centennial is theme, Corwin to speak

The Niagara County Conservative Party will hold its annual fundraiser and gathering for members and supporters May 12 at Taboo in Lockport, Chairman Dan Weiss announced.

Conservative Party-backed Congressional candidate Jane Corwin, the second-most-conservative member of the New York State Assembly, will address those in attendance.

This year's event is being billed the "Reagan100 Gala," a nod to the centennial of President Ronald Reagan's 1911 birth. Reagan remains an iconic figure for adherents to the Conservative Party, as well as the broader conservative movement, for his commitment to the principles that ushered in an unprecedented period of prosperity during the 1980s and 1990s, and heralded the collapse of Soviet communism.

"Ronald Reagan was a hugely influential figure for so many members of this party, and we couldn't let his 100th birthday pass without note," Weiss said. "This is our annual fundraiser, but it's something much bigger: it's an opportunity for small-c and large-C conservatives from around Niagara County—and, often, from throughout Western New York—to come together and celebrate the values we share. I can assure you that you won't find anyone in that room who thinks America's problem, today, is that we don't spend or tax enough."

Weiss said his party's message at the Reagan100 Gala would be simple and direct.

"We're going to give candidates for office, officeholders, and the broader conservative movement a chance to mingle, and a chance to reaffirm their belief in basic conservative principles," Weiss said. "When you look at skyrocketing gas prices, the government takeover of health care, the unwillingness of the current administration and their allies in the Senate to cut federal spending even a few billion dollars, and a Carter-esque economic malaise, you get the feeling maybe it's time to try a different approach. We want to help elect people who feel the same way."

The Reagan100 Gala will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $99 per person, payable at the door, or by mailing a check made out to "Niagara County Conservative Party" to 4206 Royalton Center Road, Gasport, N.Y. 14067. Taboo is located at 45 Main St., Lockport. The gala will feature appetizers and a buffet, along with beer, pop and wine.
