"The Merchants of Martinsville" will be the topic when the Historical Society of North German Settlements meets at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at the Wheatfield Community Center.

The speaker will be Randall Warblow, a member of the board of trustees. He is also vice president and collections committee chair at the North Tonawanda History Museum.

His talk will center on the Lockport Street area, where the Erie Canal and Bull Creek meet. This was a busy place at one time, with merchants and hotel owners of many ethnic backgrounds.

The Historical Society of North German Settlements also will sponsor a meeting of people interested in speaking Plattdeutsch. It will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, at the Wheatfield Community Center.

For information or to register for the lunch, call June Stenzel at 297-5384 before noon on Tuesday, March 29.
