U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-1 reports that a public education "About Boating Safely Course" will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Lockport Elks Lodge, 6791 N. Canal Road in Lockport. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Known as the "About Boating Safely Course," participants will receive general information about boats and maintenance, information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings, navigational rules, what to do in case of boating emergencies, and state-specific laws and regulations you must follow, all in a one-day format, reports Stephen Bailey, Flotilla 3-1 public affairs officer. "This course will meet New York state's mandatory requirements for PWC/jet ski operators," says Bailey. He notes that boat insurance companies typically discount policies to those who successfully complete the course.

Cost is $40 per person, and includes the "About Boating Safely" book, boating safety card, and certificate. Each additional family member is $20.

For more information or questions, contact Rich Acer, Flotilla 3-1 public education officer, at 795-3670.
