Lewiston Public Library January programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of January 2011.

Family Programs

A children's movie night will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 6 p.m. On the screen will be the film "Flipped."

"Family Dinosaur Day" will take place on Friday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 p.m. Featured will be a visit from Joseph "PaleoJoe" Kchodel. PaleoJoe, an author and paleontologist, will bring dinosaurs to life for children with a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth, a velociraptor skull, dinosaur puppets, and a variety of amazing fossils. Autographed copies of his dinosaur books will also be available.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Lewiston Library and the American Girl Club.

A children's movie matinee will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. Showing will be "Alpha and Omega."

Clubs and More

The Dead Beats Society meets on Monday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. The project is sponsored by the Jon F. Popkey Genealogy Room and is part of a continuing effort to allow library patrons easier access to family history records. Those interested in assisting with the digitization process of the library's obituary collection and in the collecting of source materials for researchers are welcome. The Lewiston Book Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Monday, Jan. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Public Library. On Monday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., it will meet at Asker's Café, 400 Main St., in Youngstown.

The group consists of area residents who meet regularly to discuss and critique their writing efforts, and exchange ideas and information about the craft. Guest speakers are scheduled as available. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

Mom's Book Chat will meet Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. Childcare is provided for registered participants. The library is closed to the public during this event.

The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.

January meetings for the month include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, Jan. 3, at 5 p.m.; the Lewiston Garden Club, Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 10:30 a.m.; the Friends of the Lewiston Library, Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.; and the Lake Ontario Ordinance Works Restoration Advisory Board, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 5 p.m.

The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a used book room all year long. It's open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.

Children's Events

"Tail Waggin Tutors," a reading-oriented program for children and four-legged friends, continues at the Lewiston Public Library. Those interested in participating or for further information should contact Miss Ann at [email protected] or 754-4720 with any questions.

Science Explorers Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 4:30 p.m. Featured will be "Nature in Winter," presented by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Lewiston Library and the Science Explorer's Club, includes a slide show presentation and a discussion on how animals survive in a winter climate. The library notes that portions of the program will take place outside, so dress appropriately. Registration is required by Jan. 2.

Annette Wall and the Lew-Port Middle School Builders Club will be at the Lewiston Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. Theme of the program is "Snowflake Celebrations."

The Go Green Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 4:30 p.m. Featured will be papermaking with Miss Katie from Creekside Art and Pottery. Participants will learn to make paper from recycled materials and are advised to dress accordingly, as activities may involve water and be messy. Registration is limited to 20 and is required.

The "American Girl" Club will meet on Friday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 p.m. for "Family Dinosaur Day" and PaleoJoe. Members will read a book about the "American Girl" Jess. Books are available at the library.

Alphabet Soup with Miss Ann, a story hour, is for children ages 3-5. It is offered on Mondays, Jan. 3, 10, 24 and 31, at 10:30 a.m.

Lapsit story time with Miss Ann, for children age birth to 23 months, takes place Wednesdays, Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 9:30 a.m.

Toddler hour with Miss Ann, for children ages 24 months to 3 years, will be held Wednesdays, Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 10:30 a.m.

Story time with Mrs. Leardini, for children of all ages, meets on Thursdays, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at 10:30 a.m.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The library will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1 (New Year's Day), and Monday, Jan. 17 (in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday).
