Spring edition will feature a new format twist

"Survivor: Redemption Island," the 22nd edition of television's longest-running reality competition series, premieres Wednesday, Feb.16, 2011 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network.

The spring edition of "Survivor" will feature a new twist when, for the first time, castaways who have been eliminated from the game will have an opportunity to seek redemption and return for a chance to win the million dollar prize. Each week at Tribal Council when a castaway is voted off, they will be sent to an isolated island called "Redemption Island," where they will live alone in exile. To stay on Redemption Island, they will need to compete in a duel against the next person eliminated (and then against each subsequent person voted off), with the loser being sent home. The winner of each duel earns the right to continue fighting for an opportunity to return to the game and the chance to compete for the title of sole survivor.

Sunday's finale of "Survivor: Nicaragua," won by Jud "Fabio" Birza, capped a winning season for "Survivor" in its new Wednesday (8 p.m., ET/PT) time period. "Survivor: Nicaragua," which won its time period in viewers and key demographics every week this season against regular competition, improved the year-ago time period by +83 percent each in viewers (13.36m from 7.30m), adults 18-49 (4.2 from 2.3) and adults 25-54 (5.5 from 3.0). "Survivor" was also up +1 percent in viewers compared to its own Thursday performance last season.

"Survivor" is hosted by Emmy Award-winner Jeff Probst and produced by SEG Inc. Mark Burnett, Probst and David Burris are executive producers.
