Nominations sought for Newfane's outstanding adult and youth

The Newfane American Legion Post No. 873 is currently seeking nominations for the Lester Oakes Memorial Award. The award will be presented to an outstanding adult and youth who are from the Newfane community.

All nominations must be received by Saturday, March 5, 2011. The award will be presented at the fifth annual Lester Oakes Memorial Adult/Youth Dinner at the Newfane United Methodist Church.

The candidate for the Outstanding Adult Award must be at least 21 years of age and have positively contributed to the youth community. While the candidate for the Outstanding Youth Award must be under 21, have set a positive example within the community through their involvement, activities, and accomplishment in school, church, and community organizations.

Nominations for either award may be made by an organization or an individual and more than one nomination may be made by each. In addition, every different person or organization may nominate the nominee more than once. The Newfane American Legion Post notes that individuals are only eligible to win the award once. Though previous youth winners will be eligible to win the adult award.

To make a nomination, send a letter or e-mail to Newfane American Legion Post No. 873, explaining why the nominee is worthy of being considered for this award. Judging is based solely on the information received. The more information provided, the more the committee will have to go on in making a selection.

Recipients of the awards will receive a cash award, a plaque, and their name will go on a permanent plaque at Newfane Town Hall.

All money received from the dinner will go toward the Lester Oakes Memorial Scholarship.
