Not much change foreseen in enrollment

The Niagara-Wheatfield School District shouldn't be seeing much change in enrollment in the next school year, according to Kerin Dumphrey, district business manager.

Dumphrey presented enrollment projections at the school board meeting last week.

"It's pretty much staying as is," he said, noting that the economy has affected new building in Wheatfield. Until that changes, he said, "I think we're going to be pretty much stable."

During the 2011-12 school year, Edward Town Middle School is expected to be up to 936 students from the current 911, due to a larger than usual fifth grade moving up. The high school is expected to be down to 1,335, from the current 1,350. Colonial Village Elementary should be down to 440 from 513. Errick Road Elementary should be down to 647 from 687. West Street Elementary should be down to 506 from 519. These estimates do not include the 107 children enrolled in pre-kindergarten at Colonial Village and Errick Road. Nor do they include the 21 students in the Colonial Village territory who were allowed to go to Errick or West Street because Colonial Village was designated a school in need of improvement by the state. Colonial Village's scores have improved and it no longer has that designation, Dumphrey said.

In other matters:

  • The board approved the $11.085 million bond resolution recently approved by voters and officially assigned Wendel Duchscherer Architects & Engineers for the N-W Greenway and school improvement project.
  • The board approved Anita Muzzi as adult education supervisor.
