The Lewiston-Porter Board of Education accepted Superintendent Christopher Roser's recommendations for the 2010-11 tax warrant, which included a slight tax levy increase for Lewiston and a reduced levy for Porter. The board appropriated $1.8 million to be kept in the fund balance, the same as last year.

With that budgeting, the tax levy is $21,400,704, which results in a tax rate of $22.11 per $1,000 for Lewiston, up .53 percent, or 12 cents, from the $21.99 last year; and $19.25 for Porter, reduced $1.51 from last year's $20.76. The tax warrant last year was $21,509,391.

The board approved Roser's recommendation to approve a carryover of purchase orders from last year that totaled $1,804,454 and allocate $1,202,839.74, or 3 percent of the 2010-11 approved budget, to the unappropriated fund balance. This allocation can be used for emergency situations, help stabilize next year's tax rate and/or make up for any unrealized revenue next year.

  • Norman Forney was appointed varsity boys soccer coach. He previously served as junior varsity boys soccer coach and his resignation from that position was also accepted at this meeting.
  • The board appointed Lansing E. Dickinson, colonel, USAF retired, as aerospace science instructor, Susan J. Myers as school monitor and James M. Hilts as messenger.
  • In other business, the board continued to review school policies and accepted grants in the amount of $7,979. The first grant, from Target Stores ($2,000), is for use by teachers in the Middle School, and the second is from The Tower Foundation in the amount of $5,979 for the purchase of specialized equipment for students with developmental disabilities in the primary and high school levels.
