New police officer starts work in Town of Niagara

The Town of Niagara Police Department has a new part-time officer. The Town Board, at its May 18 meeting, approved the appointment of Richard King, a retired Niagara Falls Police Department officer.

Also approved was a three-month leave of absence for Sgt. Christopher Soluri.

Currently, there are five full-time (including the chief) and 16 part-time people in the town's police department.

In other matters:

• The board directed the town attorney and Sanitation Superintendent Michael Moyer to set up with the Environmental Commission a local recycling law for a collection program for multi-resident complexes in the town. Individual home recycling already has begun.
• A resolution was passed to declare a six-month moratorium on all wind-driven energy systems and direct the town attorney and building inspector to develop a local law to regulate such facilities.
• The board determined that the town would not benefit from joining a regional storm water utility district.
• The board approved summer hours for water/sewer employees. Hours will be 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from June 7 to Sept. 3.
• The board approved $4,850.99 for a new meter reading system. The current system has broken down and is obsolete for parts and service.
• The board appointed Miguel A. Antonetti to the town's Environmental Commission.
• The board accepted the resignation of Mark Gabriele as town prosecutor.
• Cameron Miller was added to the active rolls of Niagara Active Hose Fire Company.
