Wanda Nixson

Wanda Nixson of Grand Island passed away peacefully at Northgate Manor in Wheatfield on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, with her daughter at her side. Nixson’s love of family, friends and music prevailed her whole life through.

Nixson graduated from Bible College and served in radio ministry until 1945. She then graduated from nursing school and began her medical career as a school nurse. That was followed by time at Bath Hospital in Bath; at Children’s Hospital in Buffalo; at Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania; and at Lafayette General Hospital in Buffalo. She also gave piano lessons to students.

Upon retirement, Nixson and her husband, Ken, considered relocating to Arizona. However, less than one year later they returned home and took up residence on Grand Island.

Together, the pair were members of the Grand Island Golden Age Club, joining in 1974. There, Wanda held various offices, including president. She served as pianist at every opportunity. Moreover, she started a weekly bingo game and helped organize the Golden Age Chorale. Both groups still exist.

The couple also started an “Over 50” club at Town Hall Terrace. She continued her services even after she went to Northgate Manor. Wanda was also a volunteer organist/pianist at Emmanuelle United Methodist Church on Grand Island.

She was very involved with the Grand Island Democratic Ladies. She received a presentation from Democratic Legislator Charles Swanick honoring her loyalty. The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce also recognized Wanda, naming her Senior Citizen of the Year in 1988.

Her attitude of service to others continued through her last weeks, when she knew that feeding another patient was the encouragement that was needed.

All – especially her family – will sorely miss her. Her love of family was constant and sincere.

Wanda was wife to the late Kenneth A. Nixson. Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Hawn and Heather (James) Nowocien; her grandchildren, Michelle R. (John) Doyle, James R. (Mary), Blaine R. and Kyle C. A. Nowocien; and her great-grandchildren, Samantha Nowocien, Troy and Gavin Doyle.

Francis ‘Frank’ Rodriguez

Francis “Frank” Rodriguez, 80, of Grand Island and formerly Niagara Falls, passed away on Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Rodriguez was born in Niagara Falls on Sept. 9, 1926, son to the late Sebastian and Frances (Covelli) Rodriguez. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in January 1945.

An accomplished athlete, Rodriguez enjoyed a long history of success in both softball and basketball. As a senior at NFHS, he co-captained the baseball and basketball teams. A big thrill for Rodriguez that year was playing with a team called the Red Wings in the annual Kiwanis Basketball Tournament. His team of high school players won the tournament, which was comprised of athletes from Niagara University, St. Bonaventure and Canisius College.

Rodriguez earned the nickname “The Cat” due to his quickness on the court. He used that speed and an outstanding eye to win several batting titles on the baseball – and later softball – field.

Upon graduation from high school, Rodriguez joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent the next two years. He then attended Sampson Junior College, graduating in 1948. He went on to Syracuse University and, in 1952, graduated with a major in physical education and a minor in sociology.

Rodriguez took a position as assistant recreation director in Niagara Falls before joining the United Way. He’d spend the next 30-plus years there, running Boys Clubs of America. From 1965-67, Rodriguez also served as Grand Island Recreation director.

His Boys Club endeavors included time at Pine Boys Club and East Falls Boys Club in Niagara Falls, as well as the then Town Boys Club in Tonawanda. He retired as executive director in 1986.

Over the next six years, Rodriguez worked as a merchandiser for Phillip Morris. He retired from that job in 1992.

Rodriguez joined the Ernie B’s of the MUNY Basketball League in 1952 and helped his team win three championships in six years. During that time, he was named to several all-star teams and earned a most valuable player award.

In fast pitch softball, Rodriguez played for the Ernie B’s, Stadium Grill, Rickshaw Lounge, Pat Dillon’s and Von Duggan’s Steel over a period of 20-plus years. A portion of that time was spent as a player/manager, and Rodriguez won three batting titles. The last of which was the GNSA title in 1968, when, at the age of 42, he batted .339.

Rodriguez helped his team win four New York State Class AAA Softball championships. In 1981, he was honored by the Niagara Falls Fabulous 40’s Athletic Association and was voted into its honor roll for his basketball accomplishments.

Similarly, in 1983, Rodriguez was inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame for his vast accomplishments.

Frank is survived by Donna (Hawley) Rodriguez, his wife of 53 years. Additional survivors include his children, Patricia (Harry) Beal of Kenosha, Wisc.; Michael (Kathy) and James (Mary) of Aurora, Ill.; Lisa (John) Black and Thomas (Linda-Kate), both of Grand Island; and Richard (Laurie) of Oxford, Mich. Frank was the grandfather of Hamilton (Dina), Francesca, Patrick, Harrison, Alexander and Margaret Beal; Michael, Matthew, Marcus and Joseph Rodriguez; Jillian, Erin, James, Kylee and Brianne Rodriguez; Robert, John, Kara and Franklin Black; and David, Robert and Carleigh Rodriguez.

Jay (Renee) of Niagara Falls and Donald (Mary) Palacios of Wilson; the sister of Rose Schwartzentruber of Ontario, Canada, Jennifer Zimmerman of Niagara Falls, Margaret (Fred) Manuel of New Jersey, Sister Suzanne of Clarence, Marian (Angelo) Nichele of Lewiston and Julie (Jack) Dryja of Lewiston.
