In remembrance of Frank J. Schroeder

My Father was a Grand Island resident for most of his life. We reside on Webb Road. On April 10, my Dad passed away of a massive heart attack while at home. He was 70 years old. It was very sudden and unexpected. The reason why I am writing this letter is not to tell you how he lived, but who Frank Schroeder was.

My Dad was born in Buffalo. He worked directly out of high school on the lines at a local plant, Western Electric. He worked to further his education, so while holding down a full-time job at Western Electric, he put himself through night school and earned a college degree in business.

While working at Western Electric he met my Mother, Andrea. My Father said that his marriage to my Mother was his greatest accomplishment. My parents started their family on Webb Road and had two daughters, Lynn and Stacey. A few years after my birth, Western Electric closed. My Dad wanted to keep his family on Grand Island to be close to family and friends. Most of the local industrial plants had closed or were in the process of relocating, so my Father had to look elsewhere for work. He was determined to support us and found work at Elmlawn Cemetery in the sales department. My Dad could never do a job half way and he was determined to be the best salesman that they had ever seen. He did just that. Within a short time he was leading their sales force and was appointed office manager. He gained many great friends while at Elmlawn Cemetery.

He was a huge Sabres and Bills fan. With season tickets to both. He was going to be honored this upcoming season by the Sabres organization as the longest running season ticket holder.

My Father worked at Elmlawn Cemetery until his retirement three years ago. He has spent his retirement traveling with my Mom. He recently returned from a cruise to the Caribbean with family and friends.

My Dad was quiet (except when it came to Sabres or Bills games), strong and had an intense love for his family. He put us before all.

I wanted everyone to know who the man was that they had seen at Tops every morning and who occupied the seat on the back right hand side of St. Stephen's Church every Sunday morning at the 7:30 a.m. Mass. It was my Father, Frank J. Schroeder, and he was an incredible man.

Love,
Stacey A. Schroeder,
his youngest daughter and greatest fan

Joseph Anthony Guaetta

At daybreak on May 18, 2003, six months after losing his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce Tufts Guaetta, Joseph Anthony Guaetta died at Oconee Regional Hospital. Their love story was legendary amongst family and friends for its longevity, devotion and strength.

Joseph met Joyce at a dance held at Georgia Women's College, Milledgeville, during World War II when he was a master sergeant in the United States Army, posted to Camp Wheeler Macon. He asked her to dance, she accepted and as he put his arms around her, told her that he would marry her. She laughed at him, but on her next birthday, accepted his engagement ring. They were married eight months later in 1943.

Born in Florence, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 22, 1915 to Nicola and Idria (Renda) Guaetta, Joseph was raised in Niagara Falls, New York, graduating St. Joseph's School and Trott Vocational High School, then lived in Lewiston, NY, in a home that he and Joyce helped to design. There they reared three children, Elizabeth Joyce Reimann (Eric), of Oak Harbor, Grand Island, NY, Nicholas Joseph Guaetta (Terry), and Thelma Candace Guaetta
Posey (Anthony). Survivors also include four grandchildren, Jenn Thomas (Shane), Michael (Artymowicz), Lisa Lange (Matthew), and Nicole Hoffman (Sam); six great-grandchildren, William and Joshua Thomas, Nicolas, Spencer and Olivia Lange, and Cailin Hoffman; sister Antoinette (Toni) Fera; three brothers-in-law, Robert Fera, Joel Archer and Frank Tufts; four sisters-in-law, Mary Ruth Peeler, Ann Tufts Church, Ermine Archer, and Dawn
Tufts; his beloved aunt and cousins, Grace Rend, Natalie Giacobello and Concetta Mae Bellerillo; five godchildren, Mark Fera, Robert Fera, Joy Maria Knack, William Joseph Fera, and Anne Elizabeth Fera-Shanes; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Guaetta was a manager for Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in North Tonawanda, NY. He was a Boy Scout Leader and was made a blood brother of the Tuscarora Indian Nation for the help he gave to the people of the Tuscarora Reservation near Lewiston, NY; helped to found the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, served a term as its president, and had the original idea for the Kiwanis Peach Festival, a yearly fund-raising event that continues to be held and is
well known in Western New York; and was instrumental in forming and advising its Key Club, an organization for youth. Joe and Joyce retired to Seven Lakes, North Carolina, and moved from there to Milledgeville several years ago.

The entirety of his contributions to the communities in which he lived are too numerous to mention here. What he will most likely be remembered for amongst family and friends is the love that he lived in his life for the natural world, the creating and crafting of wooden folk art pieces, which he freely gave to all who admired them, his consummate loyalty to his country, the United States, as well as his respect for his Italian heritage. Above and beyond these things are his both humble and proud devotion to his family and friends, particularly to his wife, Joyce. Theirs was a love that taught all who knew them that love was more than a feeling of spirit, but a decision, a responsibility and a lifetime commitment. It is for the depth of that devotion to his loved ones that Joseph Anthony Guaetta will be most remembered.

A Mass will be celebrated at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, at a later date.
