January 10, 2003 - Grand Island Dispatch

Anne (Sayles) Smith

Anne (Sayles) Smith of Buffalo, New York, died December 30, 2002, in West Palm Beach Florida.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret Sayles; dear sister of Daniel (JoAnn) Sayles, late Charlotte Guenther-Roesch, Nora Supples, and Charles and Theresa Sayles. She was also survived by nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a time and date to be announced.

Winifred May Kilroy Smith

Winifred May Kilroy Smith, mother of Doug Smith of Hennepin Road, died December 16, 2002, in Warsaw, Wyoming County, after a brief illness. She was 91.

Born and educated in Montclair, NJ, she lived in Warsaw for half her life, moving there in 1957 with her husband, the late Joseph W. Smith Jr.

She was a frequent visitor to Grand Island after Doug and Polly Smith moved here in 1967. Two of her grandchildren, Joseph W. Smith III and Holly Marie Smith (now Holly Jaquith), were graduated from Grand Island High School.

Friends and relatives marveled at Mrs. Smith's keen attention to detail even to her final days. She scrupulously managed her own affairs, read presidential biographies and historical novels and knit afghans for each of her great-grandchildren. A former pediatric nurse, she held and fed her newest descendant, three-month-old Clark Daniel Jaquith, less than a week before her death.

She was a fan of the Bisons and Bills, maintaining a daily or weekly record of the teams' fortunes on a wall calendar.

Other survivors include Dr. Robert W. Smith of Moultonborough, VT; two other grandchildren, Molly Smith of Kansas City, and Ryan Smith of San Francisco; and three other great-grandchildren, Douglas P. and Timothy M. of Montoursville, PA, and Nicole G. Jaquith of Locke, NY.

Mrs. Smith donated her body to the University at Buffalo Medical School. A memorial service is planned for the spring.

Walter L. DeGlopper

A memorial service will be held on January 11, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Whitehaven Road, Grand Island, New York, for Walter L. DeGlopper. Mr. DeGlopper, 87, who died on December 8, 2002, was a member of Trinity Church and a Grand Island resident for most of his life.

Mr. DeGlopper was a member of Teamster Local 449. He began work as a truck driver at age 17, and during most of his career was employed by Schutt Trucking Inc., a business founded on Grand Island by an Island resident many years ago. He retired after 45 years on the road, but continued on at a later time with the same company in an administrative capacity. The Teamsters honored him in 1977 for 45 years safe driving record.

Mr. DeGlopper was a member and former director of the Buffalo Launch Club and was awarded a life membership in 1982, and honored again with special recognition for his more than 57 years of dedication and service.

Mr. DeGlopper is survived by his wife of 66 years, Hazel (Kaegebein) DeGlopper; son Robert W. (Karen) DeGlopper of Grand Island; daughter Barbara (John) Butterworth of Odessa, Florida; grandchildren Mark, Erik (Julie), Daniel DeGlopper, John Butterworth, and Teri (John) Ferrin; great grandchildren Evan and Emily DeGlopper; sisters Bernice Bailey and Hazel Mallwitz; and brother Earl (Rita) DeGlopper, all of Grand Island. Mr. DeGlopper was the son of the late Walter J. and Florence DeGlopper and brother of the late Marion (Gerald) Coates.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

January 14, 2003 - Grand Island PennySaver

Harry P. Waechter

Harry P. Waechter, a lifelong area resident, died January 3, 2003, at his home after a short illness.

Waechter was born in Buffalo, New York in 1921 and had lived on Grand Island since 1964. He retired from the Buffalo Courier Express in 1980. He was an Army Corps veteran of WWII and a life member of the American Legion Post 264 where he was a member of the internationally acclaimed American Legion Band of the Tonawandas.

He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and was an avid bowler, gardner, and outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marie; sons Robert (Judy) of Lenexa, Kansas, and Ronald (Peggy) of Apple Valley, California; daughter Sandra Allman of Pahrump, Nevada; stepsons Timothy (Dolores) Crooks of Willard, Ohio, Thomas (Marilyn) Crooks of Frankfurt, Kentucky; and is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jacob Waechter, sister Betty Ellis, and grandson Scott.

A private service was held by the family.

January 24, 2003 - Grand Island Dispatch

Ronald M. Jarzyniecki

Ronald M. Jarzyniecki of Grand Island, New York, passed away suddenly on January 16, 2003. Ron's untimely passing occurred at the young age of 35.

Christian services were held at St. Stephens R.C. Church on Monday, January 20, 2003. Ron's memories were beautifully eulogized by his longtime best friend, Scott Perry.

Ron was born in Buffalo, NY, raised on Grand Island, and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1986. During his years at GIHS he played on the Varsity Lacrosse, Football and Hockey teams. His career after graduation allowed him to touch many lives. Ron worked for Tully Products, for his brother Dave at St. Angelo's, the Days Inn Hotel in Niagara Falls, NY, and Monroe Muffler and Brake where he managed the Grand Island branch after its opening. He completed four years of apprentice training with the I.B.E. Local 41. His background mechanical and electrical experiences provided the skills needed to embark on a promising career working as a boiler technician with his father at B.J. Muirhead Company. He most recently was proud to have completed the commissioning of the heating boilers for the new Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY.

Also known as "Mr. Raypack," he will surely be missed by his fellow workers, customers and the many lives he touched. He will be remembered for his laughter, kindness and love he had for his friends, family and the children he loved to be with.

Ron is survived by his parents Ronald and Helen (Black) Jarzyniecki; his brother Dave Jarzyniecki of San Diego, California; his sisters Lynn (J.B.) Bakkila and Wendy (Richard) Mentecky; and by nieces and nephews, Jessica, Emily, Joshua, Michelle, Daniel, and Cassie.

The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of sympathies and support offered by friends, family, neighbors of the Grand Island community, and the "Elm Street" crew of Tonawanda. Thank you all for your kindness.

God bless you Ron, rest in peace.

February 7, 2003 - Grand Island Dispatch

Kathryn M. Sheehan

Kathryn M. Sheehan, a resident of Grand Island, New York, died in her home on January 29, 2003. She was 96.

She was a 1928 graduate of D'Youville College and taught social studies and history for many years in the Pine Hill and Kenmore Town of Tonawanda School System.

She was a history scholar and participated in the Grand Island centennial in 1952. She published a history of Grand Island as part of her masters degree from Canisius College. This thesis was updated in book form for the recent sesquicentennial in 2002.

"Kay" served as president of the Canisius College Alumnae Association for several terms and maintained close ties with D'Youville College over the years.

As a parishioner of St. Stephen's Church she was a life long member of the Ladies of Charity and taught religious education in the past. Most recently, Kathryn took an active role on the planning committee for the construction of the new St. Stephen's Church.

She was a mentor to many throughout her life and continued her zest for learning and sharing her knowledge until she died.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Timothy E. and Frances M. (Conboy) Sheehan; sister of the late Edward T. (the late Margaret) Sheehan and Mary F. (the late Edward) Schnitter; and the aunt of Patricia (the late Richard) Evans, Timothy (Marion) Sheehan, Michael (Pam) Schnitter, Dr. Thomas (Janet) Sheehan, Mary Ann Madden, Rory (Pat) Schnitter, Brian (Sandi) Sheehan, Sheila (Jerry) Vella, and Joseph (Dolores) Sheehan. She was also survived by many great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews.

Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 31, at the Kaiser Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Stephen's Church. Interment was in St. Stephen's Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to D'Youville College, Porter Avenue, Buffalo, or the St. Stephen's Church Building Fund.

Lawrence 'Larry' Burns

Lawrence "Larry" Burns, age 60, of Ashland, Kentucky, died suddenly at his residence on January 27, 2003. He was born April 27, 1942, in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania.

He was the son of the late Edward Jerome and Frances Winifred (Owens) Burns; husband of Patricia (Griffin) Burns of Ashland, Ky.; and father of Terry Lynn (David) Millette-Collins of Ashland, Ky., and Sonya Renae Murphy of Cedar City, Utah. He was the brother of Edward Burns of Clarence, NY, Jack Burns of Grand Island, NY, the late Joseph Burns-Boyd, Jean Borger of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Shirley Kennedy of Brookville, Pa., Patsy Hugar of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Donna Kay Wylke of Grand Island, NY. He was also the grandfather of three grandchildren, Amber McIrvin, Joshua "J.C." Millette and Victoria Breaker, and two great grand-children, Destiny and Dustin.

Mr. Burns retired from Marathon-Ashland Petroleum LLC and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland, Ky., St. Stephen's Catholic Church on Grand Island, NY, and the American Legion Kenova Post No. 93.

Anna M. Kruse

Anna M. (Geschwender) Kruse, a lifelong resident of Grand Island, New York, died in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, 2003. Mrs. Kruse was born on Grand Island on December 21, 1907.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward and is survived by her daughter Mary Ann (Robert) Arsenault; grandsons RIchard and Ross (Rhonda) Arsenault; and great grandsons Robert and Ryan Arsenault. She was predeceased by her son Edward L. Kruse, Jr. She was also survived by nephew Paul Geschwender and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kruse was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Grand Island Fire Company and remained active until her death.

She was a member of the Altar Society of St. Stephen's Church and a long-time member of Home Bureau No. 1.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Stephen's Church at a later date.

February 8, 2003 - Lewiston Porter Sentinel

Edna Turner Sanborn

Edna Turner Sanborn, age 83 of Northbrook, Illinois (formerly of Lewiston, New York), passed away Friday, January 31, 2003, at Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview, Ill.

Mrs. Sanborn was the second of eight children born to Dudley Breed Turner Sr., D.O. and Edna Ruby Turner (nee Frisbe) of Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

She graduated from Williamsport High School and attended Lycoming College and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she earned her certificate in nursing. While her husband Earl was completing his medical training at hospitals throughout the country, Edna earned her bachelor of science degree after attending Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. She had a long career in the nursing field with over 15 years of service at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Ill., within the department of continuing education and radiology.

Edna was also a proud member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of the Lewiston Senior Center and the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, the late Earl Boyce Sanborn Jr., M.D. She is survived by her four children, Timothy A. (Ann) Sanborn, M.D. of Winnetka, Ill., Bruce (Cathleen) Sanborn of Lewiston, NY, Barbara A. Sanborn of Phoenix, Arizona, and Sharon D. Sanborn of Seattle, Washington; her seven grandchildren, Meredith, Marnie, Peter, Megan, Casey, Mallory, and Benjamin; her seven brothers and sisters, Leticia, Julia, Dudley Jr. D.O., Robert, Richard, John, and Donald, D.O.; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, at Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Ave., Kenilworth, Ill. Interment will be private.

Thomas E. Kay

Thomas E. Kay, a Grand Island, New York resident for 44 years, died February 3, 2003.

He was the husband of Barbara L. Kay; father of Carla (Joseph) Samodulski of Hicksville, NY, and Gregory J. Kay of Buffalo, NY; brother of Robert (Constance) Kay of South Glens Falls, NY, Andrew (Carol) Kay of Clackamas, Oregon, and the late Margaret Foster, Helen Hulse and Martha Kay; and son of the late Rev. Andrew Roy and Laura Kay.

Mr. Kay was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

He attended St. Lawrence University and graduated from Pattsburg State with a bachelor of science degree in science and education. He received his masters degree in science and education from State University College at Buffalo.

Mr. Kay taught sixth grade at the Maple Avenue School in Niagara Falls, NY, and then at the 95th Street School in Niagara Falls for almost 30 years before retiring in 1984.

He was also a volunteer at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society and with the American Lung Association.

Visitation was held Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Kaiser Funeral Home. Memorial services were held Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral.

Melinda Sue Link

Melinda Sue Link, 65, of Grand Island, New York, entered into peace on February 6, 2003. She was the dear daughter of the late Wesley and Hazel Link.

She is survived by her brother Bud (Wesley) Link, sister-in-law Judy Link, and cousins Sara Chapin and Jean (Ted) Miller. Melinda was the beloved aunt of Bud Jr. (Denise) Link and Victoria (Ian) Harnden, and great-aunt to Desire' and Wesley Link and Eric and Emily Harnden.

Melinda received her degree in physical therapy from Ithaca College and had her own practice for many years. She was employed at St. Mary's Manor and also Riverwood Nursing Home before she retired in 1997.

Melinda was an avid reader, master puzzler and enjoyed bird watching.

Private arrangements were made at the convenience of the family.

James Francis Hendricks

James Francis Hendricks, 72, of Dunedin, Florida, formerly of Buffalo, New York, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Manor Care of Dunedin.

Hendricks, who served with the United States Air Force, was employed as a mechanical engineer for Worthington Compressor Corp. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was survived by his wife of over 48 years, Ann Marie Hendricks of Dunedin, FL; sons James Hendricks of Clearwater, FL, and Michael Hendricks of Dunedin, FL; daughters Barbara Godwin of Dunedin, FL, and Debra Hendricks-Mahoney of Dunedin, FL; brother Paul Hendricks of Tonawanda, NY; sisters Noreen Williams of Tonawanda, NY, and Pat Guerra of Amherst, NY; and three grand-children Megan Hendricks, Matthew Godwin and Brianna Mahoney.

Visitation and service was held at the Curlew Hills Funeral Home with entombment at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.

March 28, 2003 - Grand Island Dispatch

Robert T. Hibbard

Robert T. Hibbard, 83, of Popal Lane, Bemus Point, formerly of Grand Island, New York, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, in Harnot Medical Center, Erie. A Grand Island resident from 1957 to 1991, he was born November 17, 1919 in Rochster, NY.

Prior to his retirement he had been employed by Chevrolet Motor Division, Tonawanda, NY, as the manager of the tooling department and was a member of the Masonic Lodge on Grand Island.

Surviving are his daughters Sally Weber, with whom he made his home, and Cheryl Leitner of Lyons, NY; a granddaughter Daniele Leitner of Rochester; a great grand-daughter; and a sister, Beatrice Velenovsky of Waynesboro, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Betty Sticht, whom he married September 1943 and who died May 1985; three brothers, Harold, Lee and Warren Hibbard; and a sister.

No funeral service or visitation will be observed.
