The lifting of the mask mandate in schools on Grand Island was greeted by a mixture of emotions from families of students, ranging from joy to fear. This reporter posed a question in social media to get an idea of how the community felt about the lifting of the mask mandate, nearly two years after the spreading COVID-19 pandemic forced lockdowns, the closures of schools and businesses, and the start of virtual learning.
Grand Island Half Marathon set for May 7

'Orchids After Dark' to make its debut during Orchid Show at Botanical Gardens

Afghan evacuees need our assistance

Your help is needed to help those who have helped us and are now suffering. The Grand Island Rotary, as well as other organizations in Western New York, is assisting Journey's End and three other local agencies that are in the process of resettling 335 Afghan refugees. These refugees will be making Buffalo their new home. They will account for more than one third of those coming to New York state in the resettlement of Afghan refugees who were airlifted from Afghanistan in the final days of the war.
Grand Island mask/COVID-19 test kit distribution gets large response

It was a frosty and windy Monday morning with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Along Whitehaven Road and into the parking lot of the Nike Base, cars were lined up. Over the weekend, the drivers of those cars found out that the Golden Age Center was to be a distribution point for sets of KN95 masks and COVID-19 at-home antigen test kits. Each household was entitled to receive two home testing kits, containing two tests each.

On Jan. 1, councilmen Pete Marston and Christian Bahleda, as well as Town Justice Mark Frentzel and Town Highway Superintendent Richard Crawford, were sworn into office by retired Tonawanda City Court Judge Joseph Cassata. The event was held at the Sandy Beach Yacht Club, and the master of ceremonies was Eric Fiebelkorn, president of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce.

St. Martin youth group participates in Wreaths Across America

For a number of years, a few older veterans got together annually to place wreaths at the graves of veterans at Oakland Rural Cemetery in Youngstown. Normally, they place approximately 30 wreaths at the graves, as part of Wreaths Across America. The project was started in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, the owner of Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. Worcester had a surplus of wreaths left over after the holiday season, so he decided to place the wreaths at the graves of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery.
Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island extends holiday thanks

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island thanks the hundreds of individuals and organizations who contributed to our successful 2021 holiday distribution. Fifty-four of your neighbor families were helped with food baskets and, where appropriate, gift cards for their children. Eighty of our seniors were also helped in two senior apartment complexes.

ECDOH updates COVID-19 quarantine requirements

On Oct. 27, the New York State Department of Health released an informational document that allowed local health departments to reduce the duration of a quarantine under certain conditions. Based on that document, the Erie County Department of Health is announcing an adjustment to its COVID-19 quarantine requirements.
