Grand Island Police Department drafting policy reform

The Grand Island Police Department is finalizing with town attorneys a draft of its Police Reform Action Plan and will hold another public comment session before submitting the plan to the state by the April 1 deadline.

Members resolved to rebuild, after fire tore through the Niagara Sailing Club, at 3619 E. River Road, on Saturday. The Grand Island club's flag was spared, and later hoisted up alongside the American flag.

An approval by the Erie County Industrial Development Agency's (ECIDA) Board of Directors on Wednesday for a tax incentive package presented by Grand Island's Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. should result in the life sciences company proceeding with plans to add an $85 million, 69,000-square-foot expansion to its research, development and manufacturing facility at 3175 Staley Road.

When a state judge opened the door to indoor dining for Erie County eating establishments last Thursday, Jan. 14, patrons beat feet into Grand Island restaurants. The patter of their feet was music to the ears of restaurant owners, who were more than ready to comply with the required COVID-safe measures of 50% capacity, 6-foot distance between tables, no more than four people per table and 10 p.m. closing.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced the majority of the office's staff will not report in-person for work effective Thursday. The Erie County District Attorney's Office made the decision, in consultation with Erie County and its Department of Health, in an effort to reduce the number of employees inside the buildings and prevent the spread of COVID-19. More than 75% of the DA's office employees will be permitted to work from home through the end of the year.
