Plans for Father's Day Lawn Mower Races underway

The annual Grand Island Father's Day Lawn Mower Races, Classic Car Show and 5K Kevin Doring Memorial Walk are taking registrations for the kind of competitive but mostly fun day, Sunday, June 16, on West River Parkway between Long Road and Sunset Drive. Proceeds benefit the Grand Island Relay For Life/American Cancer Society.

Casey Dahlstrom, 24, is an Eagle Scout and a wood carver. He works as an activity leader at Absolut Care, a nursing home in Orchard Park. He loves his job and says that his goal is to be "that funny faced, engaging activity guy."

Grand Island Town Supervisor Mary Cooke said the drug takeback day conducted April 27 at Town Hall was a great success. During a four-hour period, volunteers accepted 374 pounds of unused and unwanted medications from 125 vehicles.

At a joint evening meeting with the Town Board April 29, the Grand Island Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution naming Dr. Teresa Lawrence as its choice for the position of superintendent of schools. The district has been led by Interim Superintendent Paul Hashem since mid-January.

In announcing the winners, the chamber said award recipients "have given much of their time and talents in making Grand Island the wonderful community it is today."

Grand Island Board of Education: District trying to resolve $1.5 million shortfall

Administrators at the Grand Island School District are working toward resolving an estimated shortfall of $1,499.344 by the second week in April.

At the Feb. 25 Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent for School Business Services Joe Giarrizzo told trustees that even though the district is able to recoup 72.1 percent of school expenses from the state and that revenues are up a bit, "Expenses are skyrocketing. We are falling behind." While the district does have money in a reserve savings account, expenses are such that more and more reserve is used each year to close budget gaps.

Assemblyman John D. Ceretto helped celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday over the weekend by reading "The Cat in the Hat" to children at the Grand Island Memorial Library. The event, also a part of "Read Across America," was intended to spur imagination and a love of reading in children.

Yaeger is among the first group of Grand Island High School students enrolled in the new International Baccalaureate program at the school that has raised the workload for participating students. That's OK with Yaeger.
