New Cataract House Restaurant opens with unique dishes, art & history on display

The grand opening of the new Cataract House Restaurant & Academy, at 310 Rainbow Blvd., Niagara Falls, took place Friday evening. Attendees enjoyed culinary delights that were modern twists on dishes served at the historic Cataract House, took in local art, and learned about the history and partnerships that led to this continuation of the Cataract House legacy.

New president & CEO announced at Botanical Gardens

After a national search, the board of directors at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced Mark Mortenson will be appointed as the new president and CEO. Mortenson will step into the role following the retirement of David Swarts in March. Swarts will be retiring after 12 years with the organization.
Hochul establishes office of chief disability officer

NYS: Nearly $2 billion in wagers over first 30 days of mobile sports wagering

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the successful launch of mobile sports wagering in New York state, with nearly $2 billion in wagers taken during the first 30 days of operation. Her team said, "This record-breaking success, more than any other state has ever reported, will generate more than $70 million in tax revenue for New York state, providing funds to be allocated toward programs that support education, youth sports, and more."
Senate Republicans: End COVID mandates

On Monday, New York State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and members of the Senate Republican Conference called for an end to what they called "unconstitutional mandates promulgated by Gov. Kathy Hochul and her Department of Health." The Republicans announced they would force a vote on the New York Senate floor to end the mandates.

Hochul lifting mask mandate

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced her order requiring masks to be worn indoors throughout New York state will end on Thursday. Her "mask mandate" was implemented Dec. 10 in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus - particularly the delta and omicron variants. Hochul said infection numbers and related hospitalizations are now back to a pre-"winter surge" level, allowing a lessening of the restrictions.

The Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) announced free rapid coronavirus testing will be available for all Niagara County residents. Starting, Wednesday, Feb. 9, testing will be offered at the Doris W. Jones, Family Resource Center at 3001 Ninth St., Niagara Falls. Testing will be available from 9 a.m. noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Providence Farm Collective (PFC) has received a $477,000 Farmers Market Promotion Program grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). With this funding, PFC will create a farmers' market on Grant Street, in the heart of Buffalo's west side, where many of their farmers live. The market will be open from the end of June to October, and it will serve the Black community and refugees from Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Liberia.
