At 11 a.m. Sunday, May 16, the Village of Lewiston Recreation Department will host its 25th annual Spring Fling One Mile Fun Run for Kids. This free event promotes community spirit along with physical fitness. All child participants will receive a completion medal along with a commemorative T-shirt.

Since our last edition, things have really progressed on a number of fronts: The state budget was finalized in Albany, and new guidance was (finally) released by the New York State Department of Health, aligning to the updated guidance from the CDC related to social distancing in schools. We have moved quickly to advance both the 2021-22 budget and plans to return students to campus under the new guidance.
Nancy Price Memorial 5K returns with live & virtual racing in Youngstown

We missed seeing everyone for our 2020 Nancy Price Memorial 5K Race, but our community continued to support our event in a very big way. As things are continuing to open up and improve for all of us, the Nancy Price Memorial 5K Run will be run live this year as well as continuing to offer the option of running a virtual race.
Barenaked Ladies to perform at Artpark in 2022

Multi-Platinum band Barenaked Ladies will return to Artpark in Lewiston to headline a "Tuesdays in the Park" concert on July 5, 2022. The show was originally scheduled for the summers of 2020 and 2021, but was delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The U.S., Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has released its project findings for the Old Fort Niagara Streambank and Shoreline Erosion Protection Study. A 735-page report represents the federal government's response to the Lake Ontario shoreline erosion problems that threaten historically significant structures at Old Fort Niagara.
NYS: COVID-19 vaccination appointments now available at Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced appointments are now available at 10 new state-run mass-vaccination sites across the state, including The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls at 101 Old Falls St. All 10 sites will open Friday, March 19, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Each site will have the ability to vaccinate more than 1,000 New Yorkers daily, dependent on supply from the federal government.

St. Patrick's Day parades are a favorite activity this time of year, but many have been canceled due to the pandemic. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, Old Fort Niagara will host an "inverse" St. Patrick's Day parade. An "inverse parade" allows those on parade and those watching to switch places, maintain social distance and stay safe.

As I scrolled the internet a few weeks ago I came across something that sparked my interest, something going on at the Rath Building in Erie County. A group called WNY Students First had organized a rally promoting their mission of getting kids back in school five days a week. I thought to myself, "Wow, I may not be the only person that seems upset at the current system. I may not be the only parent that has watched my children's mental health deteriorate; watched them struggle in general to find happiness in today's world; or witnessed those circles under their eyes growing larger and darker."

Lewiston-Porter's "One District, One Book" reveal was hosted online Friday by school librarians Mrs. Zielinski and Mrs. Cumminsky. More than 400 participated in the live telecast event. When it was all said and done, the children's book "Fenway and Hattie," by Victoria J. Coe, was declared the winner.
