DiMino Lewiston Tops sponsored the popular annual Lewiston and Niagara Frontier Publications/Sentinel 2022 Holiday Coloring Contest. Winners were announced Sunday, and artists in first-, second- and third-place, as well as honorable mention, were recognized with prizes courtesy of the supermarket. Age groups included 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

The holidays will be a little happier for those living on the margins of society, thanks to the students in Niagara University's Student Nurses Association. The group has been collecting canned goods, blankets, toiletries and personal hygiene products that it will donate to Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc. at the end of the semester.

During the commemoration ceremony Monday for the 209th anniversary of the Tuscarora heroes' brave actions in saving the lives of Lewiston residents, Anthony DiMino (left), of DiMino's Lewiston Tops, was honored by the Tuscarora Nation for his support of the monument's maintenance and upkeep.

The New York Power Authority on Tuesday announced the Power Vista visitors center in Lewiston will close temporarily for renovations effective Monday, Dec. 19. NYPA is installing new fire safety equipment in the more-than-60-year-old building.

An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 and members from a half-dozen supporting companies had to break glass, pull off siding, cut into the roof and pump in copious amounts of water.

The New York State Department of Transportation has denied the Village of Lewiston's request to lower the speed limit on Center Street from 30 mph to 25 mph.

For several weeks, Village of Lewiston trustees have been debating what to do with "sandwich boards" promoting Lewiston businesses. They relaxed municipal laws pertaining to A-frame posts at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and have continued to permit the markers - particularly noting the need to direct people to slightly off-Center Street retailers Sgt. Peppers Hot Sauces and Brewed and Bottled Craft Beer Shop.

Despite bitter cold temperatures, myriad residents and visitors lined Center Street Sunday evening to watch the second annual Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The roughly 60-minute event featured colorful floats, dancers, first responders and local leaders doing their part to make the season, well, brighter.

"Christmas in the Village" returns Saturday, Dec. 10, to Youngstown, with plenty of holiday merry-making activities in store. It runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Youngstown Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St., and throughout the village. The Village of Youngstown presents the event with assistance from the Youngstown Business and Professional Association and local merchants.

Despite high winds and wet, rainy conditions, Santa Claus did arrive safely in Lewiston on Saturday, to continue participating in Christmas Walk weekend events. Jolly Old St. Nicholas was scheduled to appear from inside his float in the International Peace Garden but, as the weather wasn't cooperative, opted to greet children and families from inside Deal Realty (451 Center St.)

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Monday to approve a motion increasing the municipal water rate 8 cents - from $3.95 to $4.03 per 100 cubic feet of usage - effective Jan. 1, 2023. Mayor Anne Welch stressed this action is the result of an equal rate increase from the Niagara County Water District.

When Healing Earth CBD opened in the summer of 2021, public response "was very, very positive," co-owner Brandon Rush said. "You know, obviously there's a huge issue with education. A lot of people come in, and they don't know the difference between marijuana and hemp. They don't know what the difference between CBD and what THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is, or what it does to the body. So, we spend a lot of time educating customers. But I think, overall, it's been a very positive customer experience. I mean, we've done very well; we're obviously still in business."

"We don't so much as direct people, and offer what I think they should buy. We speak to our customers, and find out what their interests are, what their tastes are," owner Mark Butera said. Niagara University honored Bishop Darius G. Pridgen, the OSC Charitable Foundation, and the Rev. Joseph G. Hubbert, C.M., at its 2022 President's Dinner, Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. Proceeds from the President's Dinner benefit Niagara University's scholarship programs. More than $275,000 was raised toward student scholarship assistance during the event.

The New York Power Authority announced fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of the Power Authority's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, will close for the season at dusk today, Tuesday, Nov. 15. The fishing pier located near the Upper Mountain Fire Co. at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the water intakes along the upper Niagara River will also close for the season.

The Library of Congress recently published a collection of materials that highlight the rich stories, culture and traditions of the Ransomville Speedway, dating back to its inception in the mid-1950s as the Ransomville Slow Pokes club by Ed Ortiz, Rich Cantara and other racers, to keep local kids from racing on Ransomville streets.
