Lewiston Town Board addresses personnel issues

Lewiston Town Board members began the process Monday of getting the town's now-paused recreational programs restarted for 2021. Included was approval for Recreation Director Mike Dashineau to fill a part-time recreation clerk/typist position currently unfilled, and to begin planning for the town's youth baseball and softball programs, as well as the anticipated hiring of a recreational leader and rec program aides.
Niagara County gives greenlight to moderate- and higher-risk sports

Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton on Wednesday said moderate- and higher-risk sports in Niagara County may proceed in accordance with New York state guidelines. Last Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the decision on whether these sports could start back up would be made by each county's health director.

Over the past year, 20,333 Niagara County neighbors in need of all ages were served by the 10 programs Catholic Charities offers here. We provided basic emergency assistance, including support for food and finding housing.
31st annual 'Doctors with a Heart Day' is Feb. 13

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 13, Dr. Glenda R. Rose and Dr. Thomas G. Barba of Rose Chiropractic P.C. in Lewiston will be sponsoring the 31st annual "Doctors with a Heart Day" for their patients. Nonperishable food items will be collected to benefit the Niagara Community Action Program (NiaCAP) food pantry in exchange for chiropractic services.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.

Though Erie County has made statewide headlines over the past month for its high number of coronavirus cases, more attention is starting to shift to neighboring Niagara County - where 11.5% of people tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday were positive. The seven-day average at that point was 8.6%, which was second in New York (only trailing Allegany County's 9.1%).
Garden Club gives back

Activities included: the preparation of the wreaths hung by the Department of Public Works on lamp posts, placement of wreaths on Center Street fences, and decoration of small gardens in the village.
