Big R honors 2013 champions, specialty award winners

More than 240 guests gathered last Friday, Nov. 1, to celebrate the accomplishments of many. More than 60 Ransomville Speedway members received point fund monies and sponsor bonus awards totaling more than $25,000.
Buffalo Junior Sabres 12U Quebec tournament roster announced

The Buffalo Sabres have announced the roster for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 12U hockey team that will compete at the 55th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament from Feb. 12-23, 2014, at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec.

The team, created specifically to participate in the annual 11-day tournament held each February in Quebec City, is comprised of players who reside in the Western New York and Central New York regions.

The tournament, commonly referred to as the "Pee-Wee World Championship," is the oldest and most prestigious youth hockey tournament in the world.

Although Friday night's game against the Bengals of Buffalo State did end in a lopsided 96-71 win for the Niagara University men's basketball team, there proved to be some minor glitches the Purple Eagles need to work out before they tip-off the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 9, against Seton Hall.

Fishing with 'Big Joe'

When sitting in the coffee shop one Friday morning, I got a cell phone call from "Big Joe" asking if I wanted to go fishing the river that morning. After a "quick think," my wife said, "Go, get going; you don't need to do anything today." She was right; the only thing I needed to do was to go fishing. I'm always happy to go when Big Joe calls, I've known him all his life, and he turned out to be a darned good fisherman.

The Buffalo Sabres have announced the team will again take part in the NHL Hockey Fights Cancer program during the team's home game, presented by ECMC, on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., against the Dallas Stars. As part of an NHL-wide initiative to raise money and awareness for cancer research, the Sabres will be hosting events throughout the night with the help of local cancer patients and their charitable organizations.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens today reminded all new hunters or trappers planning to go afield this upcoming hunting and trapping season that they must first complete a mandatory hunter or trapper education course before they can obtain the appropriate sporting license. The 2013 season came to a close last Saturday night with the annual King of the Hill events sponsored by Investor's Services. Twin $1,000 to win 100-lap mains for the Investor's Services Sportsman and Ki-Po Chevrolet Street Stocks highlighted the weekend. A total of 150 cars participated in the two-day affair.

There is a magnificent bird of prey that lives among us, one that's rarely identified by anyone who truly knows what it is. Last June, I received an email from John Eddy, an outdoorsman friend of mine who sent me a link to a video showing an osprey "fishing" for its next meal.
