Any child in grade school could draw you a picture of a car or a house, maybe a face, or even the family pet. He or she may create any of those and be pretty good too. But these skills aren't for everyone, and even if they are pretty good at it most won't stick with it through their lifetime.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, from 6:30 to 9 a.m., the Buffalo Fire Department will hold its annual "Fill the Boot" program, with this year's proceeds going to the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Research Team, or SMART. The firefighters will be joined by Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta, former Sabres players Andrew Peters, Darryl Shannon and other Sabres alumni on eight separate corners throughout the City of Buffalo to collect funds for the program.

The fifth annual Jason Raby Memorial 5K Race and one-mile Fun Walk is being held at Lewiston-Porter Senior High School on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. The event will be held in honor of Jason Raby, who graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in 2001 and suddenly passed away at the young age of 25 while playing basketball at Niagara University in 2008.

HARBORcenter Development has announced an agreement was reached with Marriott International and Shaner Hotels to develop and operate the hotel facility at HARBORcenter in downtown Buffalo. The hotel property, which has been awarded a full-service Marriott franchise to be operated by Shaner Hotels, will be part of a $170 million multi-use hockey and entertainment complex in the Canalside District.

Buffalo also traded defenseman Andrej Sekera to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Jamie McBain and a second-round pick (35th overall) in this year's draft.
