Registration is now open for Parks & Trails New York's 24th annual Cycle the Erie Canal tour, an opportunity to bike across New York on part of the Empire State Trail and "take in the rich history of the legendary canal that transformed America." The eight-day, 400-mile recreational bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany is scheduled for July 10-17.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos on Thursday announced DEC was recognized as Agency of the Year by the National Deer Association (NDA) for the state's leadership in white-tailed deer management. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the release of a proposal to "clarify and simplify" sportfishing regulations based on public feedback and DEC fisheries manager reviews of rules associated with the management of the state's fisheries. The proposed rulemaking also includes a limited number of waterbody-specific regulation changes to support improved management of these waters.

New York Power Authority fishing piers to close for season

New York Power Authority fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, will close for the season, at dusk, Tuesday, Nov. 30. The fishing pier near the Upper Mountain Fire Co. at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the water intakes along the upper Niagara River will also close for the season.

The Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series will make its return to the Big R for the 37th edition of the Summer Nationals on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The 2022 edition of the Summer Nationals will be a 75-lap feature for "The Beasts of the Northeast." Thursday, Aug. 25, will be used as a rain date, if needed.

Recently, officials from the Niagara River Greenway Commission met with Town of Grand Island committee members who are working on its trails and bike routes. They took a bicycle ride down Grand Island Boulevard to finalize a direct route through town to officially connect the extensive Niagara River Shoreline Trail from Buffalo's Outer Harbor north to Youngstown.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced New York's fifth "Free Fishing Day" of the year is on Saturday, Sept. 25. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is celebrated annually to promote outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and target shooting. New York provides anglers with six "Free Fishing Days" each year.

"Money" Mat Williamson from St. Catharines, Ontario, and Middleport's Derek Wagner won the Sid and Carol Jeffery Memorial events for the Krown Undercoating Modifieds and Investor's Service Sportsman respectively Friday night at the Ransomville Speedway. For Williamson, it was his third victory of the season at "The Big R." For Wagner, it was his second triumph of the season.

The Division of Consumer Protection and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) are alerting New Yorkers of all ages of the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. A new CDC report revealed bicycle-related deaths nationally increased between 2009 and 2018, primarily among adults. Males were three times more likely than females to end up in the hospital with traumatic brain injuries.
