Officials of the Buffalo AAA MUNY Baseball league announced the first-ever "WNY Home Run Derby" is happening Saturday, Aug. 13, at Sheridan Park in the Town of Tonawanda. The daylong event will feature some of the area's best hitters, competing in high school, college and open divisions.

"Reelin' for a Cure" is returning to Olcott and Wilson harbors from 6 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 19. In its seventh year, the fishing tournament will host hundreds of women angling for prize money, bragging rights and the opportunity to raise money for women battling cancer.

The new disc golf course that opened at the beginning of summer in Royalton Ravine Park appears to be a huge hit with Niagara County residents, according to Niagara County Legislator Mike Hill. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced a new state record for smallmouth bass was set June 15, opening day for bass harvest season. Thomas Russell Jr. of Albion reeled in an 8-pound, 6-ounce smallmouth bass from Cayuga Lake, Seneca County. Russell's bass surpassed the previous record by two ounces, a tie between fish caught on Lake Erie in 1995, and in the St. Lawrence River in 2016.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed a pay increase for state lifeguards to help address a staffing shortage at New York State Park beaches and pools, and Department of Environmental Conservation campgrounds and day use areas beaches. Starting pay rates for lifeguards at upstate facilities will increase 34%, from $14.95 per hour to $20 per hour, and 21% for lifeguards at downstate facilities, from $18.15 per hour to $22 per hour.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced new recreational saltwater fishing regulations for black sea bass and scup that take effect immediately in New York's marine and coastal district. These regulatory changes are necessary for New York state to remain in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) by reducing recreational harvest of scup and black sea bass.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the state record for channel catfish was broken on May 8. Using cut bait while bottom fishing, Bailey Williams of Watertown reeled in a 35-pound, 12-ounce channel catfish from the Black River in Jefferson County. Bailey's record-breaking catch surpassed the previous state record catfish, caught from Lake Ontario in 2017, by 9 ounces.
