DEC announces a temporary blackout period for sporting license sales and game harvest reporting

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens today announced that, beginning Thursday, Dec. 26, the public will not be able to purchase hunting, fishing or trapping licenses, or secure a recreational marine fishing registration or report their harvested game.

The Town of Lewiston Recreation Department reports it is now taking applications for rentals at the Lewiston Family Ice Rink for December and January of this winter. "Days available are very limited. Rentals can be used for any type of party or approved ice activity, including birthday parties," said Mike Dashineau, town parks and recreation director.

Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula today announced Pat LaFontaine has been hired to serve as president of hockey operations for the team. Pegula also announced Darcy Regier and Ron Rolston have been relieved of their respective duties. Ted Nolan has been hired as the team's interim head coach and the Sabres have retained the remainder of the coaching staff.

At a press conference this morning at the First Niagara Center, Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula announced general manager Darcy Reiger and coach Ron Rolston have been fired. Former Sabres star Pat LaFontaine has been brought on as president of hockey operations. He, in turn, has brought back former coach Ted Nolan to serve as interim coach.

Buffalo Junior Sabres 12U Quebec tournament roster announced

The Buffalo Sabres have announced the roster for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 12U hockey team that will compete at the 55th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament from Feb. 12-23, 2014, at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec.

The team, created specifically to participate in the annual 11-day tournament held each February in Quebec City, is comprised of players who reside in the Western New York and Central New York regions.

The tournament, commonly referred to as the "Pee-Wee World Championship," is the oldest and most prestigious youth hockey tournament in the world.

When sitting in the coffee shop one Friday morning, I got a cell phone call from "Big Joe" asking if I wanted to go fishing the river that morning. After a "quick think," my wife said, "Go, get going; you don't need to do anything today." She was right; the only thing I needed to do was to go fishing. I'm always happy to go when Big Joe calls, I've known him all his life, and he turned out to be a darned good fisherman.

The Buffalo Sabres have announced the team will again take part in the NHL Hockey Fights Cancer program during the team's home game, presented by ECMC, on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., against the Dallas Stars.
