History Center announces summer children's programs

Higgins: More than $645,000 in funding for The Service Collaborative of Western New York

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $645,259 awarded to The Service Collaborative of Western New York. Funded by the American Rescue Plan and fiscal year 2022 appropriations, the AmeriCorps grant will provide support for the AmeriCorps Builds Lives through Education (ABLE) Early Childhood Program, which helps close education gaps among preschool students in Western New York.
'Passion and Patronage Gifts from the Gerald Mead Collection' at Castellani Art Museum

"Passion and Patronage Gifts from the Gerald Mead Collection" opens at the Castellani Art Museum on Friday, July 1, and is on view until Sunday, Dec. 18. This exhibition features noted Buffalo art collector Dr. Gerald C. Mead Jr.'s gifted artworks to the museum (since 1997), as well as his promised bequest gift of 54 works by 43 artists.

WNY Book Arts Center (Book Arts) will launch the 2022 PRINTING PARTNERS sessions in conjunction with community partner Carnegie Art Center. This program offers free, sequential art classes to children and families in their own neighborhoods, and as always it is free to participate in. Kathy Hochul recently announced the State University of New York Board of Trustees directed all 64 SUNY campuses to update their policies regarding the use of a chosen name and pronouns to ensure that transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary students' identities are fully reflected and represented in campus systems. This change is the next step taken in SUNY's mission to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students within the LGBTQIA+ community.

AAA: 18 people die in NYS crashes involving teen drivers every summer in '100 Deadliest Days'

The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, 7,124 people died in teen driver-related summertime crashes over a 10-year period from 2011-20. That's more than seven people a day each summer, and that is nearly half of the total number of those killed in teen-driver crashes for the entire rest of the year.
