Dr. Timothy Osberg, professor of psychology at Niagara University, has been a longtime advocate of spreading awareness of mental health issues on campus. So, when Niagara University's Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement hosted a workshop for individuals to become trained mental health first aid instructors as part of a larger effort to increase the mental health literacy of the Niagara County region, he decided to participate.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.

Niagara County Community College will begin the spring 2021 semester on Jan. 19 at both the Sanborn campus and Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. Most classes will operate virtually through Feb. 1 while a limited number of SUNY approved high-contact labs will take place in-person throughout the semester.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the results of New York's annual holiday toy, coat and school supply collections, which took place across the state over the past several weeks. Members of the governor's administration organized collections across the state and are distributing 7,348 toys, coats and school supplies to communities in need. For the first time, donations were also collected by mail to provide another option to participate amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a time when the pandemic has brought challenges for many in the academic realm, Niagara County Community College is improving access to higher education for high school students through the college acceleration program (CAP). CAP allows students to take college courses at their own high school, following NCCC curriculum. In essence, the dual-enrolled high school students are getting a head start on their college careers.

University at Buffalo leadership on Thursday announced the university's plans for the spring semester, which will mirror operations in the fall in that UB will follow a modified in-person format. An executive order approved Dec. 13 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo will waive the 90-day waiting period for pharmacists and pharmacy interns to administer COVID-19 vaccines after their approval, allowing pharmacists across the state to play a greater role in ending the pandemic, say University at Buffalo experts Karl Fiebelkorn and Christopher Daly, both in the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Junior League of Buffalo will award two $2,000 scholarships to graduating female high school seniors who are outstanding leaders in the Western New York community. The scholarships are for post-high school institutions to assist the student in defraying expenses for tuition, books, fees or dormitory. They are awarded based on evidence of demonstrated leadership skills within their school and community. Additionally, the student's background should show strong evidence of being well rounded in both personal and academic endeavors.

Christopher Sheffield has been promoted to vice president for student affairs at Niagara University. The NU alumnus, who graduated in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in communications and earned his master's degree in criminal justice and criminology in 2001, has held a number of key roles at the university over his 19-year tenure, most recently serving as the associate vice president of student affairs and institutional effectiveness.

While the educational opportunity program (EOP) has been around since former New York State Assemblyman Arthur O. Eve started it in 1967, it is relatively new to Niagara County Community College. The program started at NCCC in August of 2016 with the goal of providing academic workshops, tutoring, counseling, advisement and financial assistance to historically under-served students who require additional academic support.

The executive committee of Section VI has voted to postpone the start date for the winter season's low- and moderate-risk sports to Jan. 4, 2021. In a morning session, the committee paused boys and girls bowling, rifle, indoor track, boys swim and skiing from the previously chosen date of Dec. 14.
