On Feb. 17, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to use certain powdered infant formula products from Abbott Nutrition's facility in Sturgis, Michigan; and Abbott initiated a voluntary recall of certain products.

Local high school softball teams support Mental Health Association in Niagara County

The Niagara Wheatfield High School and Lockport High School softball teams conducted a fundraiser during the month of April, selling cards for $1 apiece, with proceeds going to the Mental Health Association in Niagara County in recognition of May's Mental Health Awareness Month. More than $1,400 was raised through the card sales to support programming and services for those living with a mental health diagnosis in Niagara County.

State lawmakers highlight historic investment in Western New York schools

On Friday, New York State Sen. Sean Ryan, Assembly member Jon Rivera and Assembly member Bill Conrad gathered at Hamburg High School to highlight the $31 billion investment in New York's schools included in the recently passed state budget for fiscal year 2022-23. The budget provides a $169.2 million (6.8%) increase in funding for school districts in Western New York as part of a $2.1 billion increase in total funding for New York's schools.

In recognition of the gift, the university will rename the college of business to the Holzschuh College of Business Administration. Hochul signs legislation preventing colleges from withholding transcripts because of unpaid debts

Kathy Hochul has signed legislation S.5924-C/A.6938-B that prohibits colleges from withholding a student's transcript because of unpaid debts or charging individuals who owe debts a higher fee to obtain their transcript. This legislation ensures students can access their transcript when necessary, so that they may continue their education or find a job.

On Tuesday, Villa Maria College broke ground on a significant capital improvement project to renovate its 61-year-old dining hall. Made possible by a major donation from local restauranteur, civic leader and philanthropist Russell J. Salvatore, the $1 million renovation project is scheduled to be completed ahead of the fall 2022 semester. The new space will be called The Russell J. Salvatore Commons.
