NYS: $28 million in federal funding to help students prepare for college

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state was awarded a $28 million, seven-year Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase college and career readiness for more than 6,200 low-income New York state students. The GEAR UP program will help New York students attending high-poverty middle and high schools prepare for and succeed in college.

Niagara University honored Bishop Darius G. Pridgen, the OSC Charitable Foundation, and the Rev. Joseph G. Hubbert, C.M., at its 2022 President's Dinner, Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Niagara Falls Convention Center. Proceeds from the President's Dinner benefit Niagara University's scholarship programs. More than $275,000 was raised toward student scholarship assistance during the event.

On Nov. 15, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office deputy assigned as the school resource officer at the Starpoint School District received a report of a possible threat of violence at the school. After an investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Bureau, a juvenile student who attends Starpoint Middle School was charged with one count of making a terroristic threat (a D- felony).

Canisius President Steve K. Stoute on Monday announced the college will adopt a test-free policy for undergraduate admissions, beginning with students applying for admissions in fall 2024. Students in Debbie Wilczak's fashion design/interior decorating program, at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center, recently had the opportunity to customize their own sneakers. The students used leather or fabric paint to explore their artistic abilities to make their custom shoes. They used Disney and the movies "Star Wars" and "Scream" as their inspirations.

NIH awards major grant to UB to boost newborn screening accuracy

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a University at Buffalo researcher an extremely competitive grant known as an R01 grant to lead an international effort to dramatically improve the accuracy of newborn screening for three rare, often fatal, genetic diseases. The five-year, $3.8 million grant is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the NIH.
