The Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club is hosting an event that will allow residents to not only help themselves, but to also support their local community. The Rotary Club will hold its first "Shred-It" fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center, at 5300 Military Road, Lewiston.

Researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute have found that a new formulation of a promising anticancer agent, the small chemical molecule FL118, is even more effective in controlling two types of cancer than a version reported in PLOS ONE six months earlier proved to be. Additional evidence also suggests that the agent may successfully treat other solid tumors as well.

Community Missions of Niagara Frontier will host its 11th annual Feet or Famine Walk on Saturday, April 27. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. at Whirlpool State Park, with the walk following shortly after at 11:15 a.m. Around 100-200 walkers are expected to attend, and pets on leashes are welcome.

Metro Mattress, upstate New York's largest mattress retailer, has launched its "50 Beds in 50 Days" charitable program in the Buffalo area. This is the fourth year of the program, which promises to donate mattresses to charitable organizations throughout the Buffalo area that provide services for children in need, individuals suffering from abuse, those who are ill and in need of care, veterans, and people who are homeless or underserved.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, has helped finalize a third consecutive on-time state budget. Ceretto remarked the fiscally responsible state spending plan includes the lowest middle-class tax rates in 60 years, as well as additional tax relief for middle-class families. The Buffalo Zoo's polar bear cub will be out on exhibit during public hours beginning Friday, March 29. Visitors to the Buffalo Zoo can view the now famous cub, nicknamed Luna, during limited viewing hours every day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the exotic domestic animals exhibit near the zoo's main entrance.

Employees of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center voted overwhelmingly last Thursday to authorize their negotiating committee to plan a picket of the hospital if negotiations failed to achieve a settlement by week's end. When talks failed to progress last Friday, the employee committee notified the hospital that staff would picket on April 3 if no agreement was reached by that date.
