Survey: 7 out of 10 Americans unlikely to travel for holidays

A new national survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) shows many Americans are not expected to travel this holiday seasons. Results show 72% of Americans are unlikely to travel for Thanksgiving and 69% are unlikely to travel for Christmas, compounding the challenges for the hotel industry during this public health crisis.

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed 385 new coronavirus cases for Friday, Nov. 6. This is the highest daily case total among Erie County residents since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and exceeds the previous high total of 277 new cases set on May 4.

Law mandating seat belt use in rear of all vehicles takes effect

New York's new rear seat belt law goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York State, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.

Niagara County Department of Health: Results of rapid testing of school staff 'very encouraging'

The Niagara County Department of Health on Friday said it has completed voluntary, rapid testing days of teachers and staff in five school districts and, thus far, the results are not showing any significant presence of COVID-19 in schools. According to the health department, 574 tests have been completed, with 571 negative results to just three positives.

Heart, Love & Soul opens one-stop services center for homeless

On Wednesday, local officials were on hand as Heart, Love & Soul food pantry cut the ribbon on the newly constructed Sr. Beth Brosmer Center. The center will house its new Daybreak program - a collaboratively designed one-stop program involving more than 30 partner agencies. The organization says the Daybreak program will increase access to services and offer additional support for people experiencing homelessness.
Local officials call on residents to demand state protect theater industry

Earlier this week, New York state's movie theater industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced theaters across the state (except for NYC) could finally begin to reopen. Per state safety guidelines, theaters can only maintain a 25% capacity; with no more than 50 people in front of each movie screen.

The Niagara County Board of Elections will be open expanded hours for absentee balloting ahead of the Nov. 3 general election: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 21-22; Monday, Oct. 26, and Wednesday, Oct. 28; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 24 and 31.
