Hochul seeks new COVID funding

Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a letter to the New York congressional delegation "illustrating the need for additional federal funding for the national COVID-19 response to ensure preparedness for future variants. This funding will help New Yorkers continue to move safely forward through the pandemic."
New York Power Authority fishing piers to open for season

New York Power Authority fishing facilities including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant will open for the season Friday, April 1, weather and water levels permitting. The fish cleaning station and handicap access elevator at the dam site will also be available if temperatures remain above freezing.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz on Monday announced an agreement between New York state, Erie County and the NFL's Buffalo Bills franchise for a $1.4 billion new stadium in Orchard Park. Hochul's negotiations secured a 30-year commitment for the Bills to remain in Buffalo, and a combined $550 million from the NFL and Bills - approved by the NFL owners.

While discussing potential candidates, the committee said it was important to "find an individual who truly encapsulates the spirit of Dyngus Day. After a great deal of deliberation, there was really only one person who fit the bill, and his name is 'Bozo.' "

Niagara County announces façade grant program for businesses

The Niagara County Center for Economic Development announced the launch of the new Niagara County Façade Program (NCFP). The NCFP will provide matching grants up to $50,000 for eligible businesses in order to rejuvenate their properties to help bring vibrancy to the central business districts in communities across the county. The county has allocated $3 million for the program through the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Red Cross testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies

For a limited time, the American Red Cross has resumed testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for coronavirus antibodies. As New Yorkers prepare to set their clocks forward one hour on Sunday, March 13 (Daylight Saving Time), the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is urging everyone to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Homeowners with alarms that have sealed, non-removable batteries should test the alarms to see if they are functional and check their expiration dates. Alarms equipped with removable batteries should have their batteries replaced.

Community celebrates as Ghada Have It! returns to town

In July of 2021, Bashar Srouji was in the midst of realizing his lifelong dream. His Mediterranean restaurant/pizzeria, Ghada Have It!, was six months into a successful first year of operation. But on July 20, a historic rainstorm in the Town of Niagara nearly washed those dreams away completely.
