Grand Island Fire Chief Kevin Koch reports that a group of concerned citizens recently donated several lifesaving rescue breathing units for family pets that have been overcome by smoke or noxious fumes during a fire emergency.
Ceretto to hold mobile office hours in Grand Island once a month starting Dec. 18

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, has announced that, once a month starting Dec. 18, he will open a satellite office on Grand Island. Hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road. Island constituents are encouraged to come meet with Ceretto and discuss issues of importance to them and their community.
Niagara River Greenway Commission: Public comment period opens for Buckhorn State Park project

The Niagara River Greenway Commission has announced that the public comment period has opened for the 37th round of projects. In addition, the commission announced that the public comment time will close at the end of the day on Dec. 31.

Projects are posted at www.niagaragreenway.org. Comments may be submitted either at the website or by hard copy to the Commission at 2136 West Oakfield Road, Grand Island, NY 14072.

Island hosts Silver Star presentation

Sixty-three years to the day after his actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers, a Marine was honored Wednesday on Grand Island.

At the Charles N. DeGlopper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Congressman Brian Higgins presented the family of Cpl. Richard J. Blasinski with medals earned by Blasinski as a member of the "Chosin Few," a name given to the Marines who fought in the Battle of Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin in North Korea during the Korean War. Outnumbered 8 to 1 on one of the coldest days in North Korea, Marines fought Chinese forces in rough terrain.

Proclamation issued in support of 'Small Business Saturday'

The Grand Island Town Board has proclaimed Nov. 30, two days after Thanksgiving, as "Small Business Saturday" on Grand Island and urged all residents "to support local businesses that we value in our community by patronizing them on 'Small Business Saturday' and repeatedly throughout the year."

On Nov. 27, 1950, during the Korean War, Corporal Richard J. Blasinski saved many lives. He was awarded the Silver Star, but was never formally recognized before his passing in 1991.

The Grand Island of Chamber Commerce is putting on the second annual Light Up the Boulevard Electric Light Parade and Festival on Nov. 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. The evening's activities will include Grand Island's first-ever Rudolph Run, Electric Light Parade, lighting of the official Town Tree, visits with Santa (sponsored by Kelly's Country Store) music and carolers, craft stations, and vendor booths.
CROP Walk Raises $4K to feed hungry

The big prize is a golden sneaker mounted on a board. The sneaker was once the Rev. Earle King's running shoe. Running shoes get retired more quickly than walking shoes, and the pastor of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 2587 Baseline Road, transformed his shoe into the most coveted prize of Grand Island's annual CROP Walk, held on Oct. 13 in Beaver Island State Park.

Veterans Day services Nov. 11

The Town of Grand Island will honor veterans of past military campaigns during the annual Veterans Day program. This year, the town will honor veterans of the Cold War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War.

Veterans, family members, and friends are invited to attend the program on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park, located at 1717 Bedell Road. Each Veteran will receive a memento.

Grand Island veterans are asked to notify the Recreation Department if they will attend the program on Nov. 11, or if a veteran will be represented by a family member.
