Higgins: $200,000 in federal funding for Compass House

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $200,000 awarded to Compass House. Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and awarded through the Administration for Children and Families, Family and Youth Services Bureau Basic Center Program, the grant will continue support for emergency housing and resources for homeless and runaway youth in the Western New York community.

Flu shot clinic to be held at Golden Age Center

The Grand Island Golden Age Center, at 3278 Whitehaven Road, will host a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The clinic is "a community event that's open to the public right here on Grand Island," explained Jen Menter, recreation supervisor of the center. The flu shots will be administered by Walgreen's employees.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced two federal grants totaling $1,979,097 awarded to Endeavor Health Services and the Community Health Center of Buffalo (CHCB). His team said, "Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and awarded through the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics program, grants will expand access to mental health and substance use services in Western New York's underserved communities."

Erie County Personnel Department announces modernization of civil service exam process

The Erie County Personnel Department announced it has begun to allow the public to sign up and pay for civil service exams online. Previously, the department required civil service test takers to complete a paper application and then mail or drop off the application and payment to its offices in downtown Buffalo.
Catholic Health resumes expanded hospital visitation hours

Catholic Health is expanding its hospital visiting hours. Patients may have up to two visitors at a time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Sisters of Charity Hospital (Main Street and St. Joseph campuses). Visitation beyond normal hours continues to be permitted under certain conditions.

Children enjoyed pony rides, as well as opportunities to feed llamas and other animals, as well as to view turtles, snapping dragons and assorted creatures. Food trucks offered a variety of foods for sale for all visitors.

Each year, DEC's urban and community forestry program coordinates the contest to promote the value of trees in the environment and New Yorkers' lives. UB department of music, BPO collaborate to commemorate Lukas Foss

Lukas Foss (1922-2009) was a composer, conductor, pianist and visionary whose legendary contributions to the Buffalo arts scene were transformative. From 1963-70, Foss served as the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), championing the works of living composers and 20th century music. In 1964, he co-founded and served as co-director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at the University at Buffalo, where he ushered in innovative works and performances for more than two decades.
