Kearns to host fall 'DisAbility' awareness event

Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns and the Erie County Office for People with Disabilities will be holding a special "DisAbility Awareness Day" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Erie County Auto Bureau located in the Sheridan Plaza at 2309 Eggert Road in the Town of Tonawanda. No appointment is required for this community outreach event.
United Way of Greater Niagara now accepting funding applications

United Way of Greater Niagara has officially began accepting applications for program funding. Nonprofit agencies, located within Niagara County and/or the City of Tonawanda, that run programs aligned with United Way's new focus, are eligible to apply.

Hochul announces economic development awards in WNY to spur nearly $9 million in capital investments

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the New York Power Authority board of trustees approved more than $1.5 million in funding awards under the Western New York Power Proceeds program to Northland Workforce Training Center and Top Seedz, a Buffalo-based organic food company, designed to spur nearly $9 million in capital investments and support 53 jobs — with 11 of those jobs newly created.

The Grand Island Fire Co. held a recruitment event on Sept. 16 in front of Tops Friendly Markets. Zach Bernfeld, one of the volunteers at the event, said people should consider joining the fire company because "It's good to help your community. You get free training. You can go through a bunch of fire classes and become an EMT or a paramedic, if you'd like. You can become a cadet at 16 and a regular member at 18."
Bone marrow donation touches lives

On Sept. 16, the day of the Be the Match donor drive signup event at Town Hall, Kim Kalman received an anonymous letter from the wife of the recipient of her bone marrow. According to Be the Match rules, all correspondence between donors and recipients has to remain anonymous until a year after the donation.

Julia Nowak, an artist from Amherst, said she loves transforming old compact discs, DVDs and vinyl records into clocks of various sizes, each with a different abstract pattern. She creates her clocks with a technique called fluid art. Fluid art is an abstract painting technique that involves the use of fluid art mediums, such as acrylic paints.
