Grand Island Historical Society to hold Christmas luncheons

The Grand Island Historical Society will hold its annual Christmas luncheons at River Lea at noon Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and Dec. 4. This year's program will feature a portrayal of Clara Barton by local presenter Denise Reichard.

Marie Edonyemya walked down a boat dock and filled a large bucket with water from the Niagara River, with the help of her husband, Byaombe Shabani. In front of a large group at the start of the Oct. 4 CROP walk at Beaver Island State Park, Edonyemya wrapped her head with colorful material, then Byaombe lifted the bucket and placed it on his wife's head.

The National Fire Protection Association notes nighttime fires can generate deadly gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, which can result in fatal consequences for sleeping family members if there is no advance warning. Therefore, the 2015 fire prevention theme has been designated "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm."
