Grand Islanders react to lifting of school mask mandate

The lifting of the mask mandate in schools on Grand Island was greeted by a mixture of emotions from families of students, ranging from joy to fear. This reporter posed a question in social media to get an idea of how the community felt about the lifting of the mask mandate, nearly two years after the spreading COVID-19 pandemic forced lockdowns, the closures of schools and businesses, and the start of virtual learning.

The Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force and its families and consumer support and advocacy group are coordinating activities for National Black Balloon Day on Sunday, March 6. The event began in 2016 in Peabody, Massachusetts, and Erie County has participated each year.
Local governments asked to participate in National Clean Watersheds Needs Survey

The Environmental Facilities Corp. has launched the 2022 Clean Watersheds Needs Survey for New York state. As required by law, New York participates in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) national survey to assess the capital investment needed for water quality infrastructure.

Erie County lifts mask mandate for all county buildings

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced the mask mandate currently in effect in all Erie County-owned buildings would be lifted as of Monday, Feb. 28. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website now includes information on COVID-19 community levels nationwide, a measure of the impact of COVID-19 illness on community health and health care systems, and lists Erie County in the "medium" category.
Grand Island Half Marathon set for May 7

ECDOH updates COVID-19 testing options

The Erie County Department of Health is reminding Erie County residents they can seek free coronavirus testing. ECDOH has updated its procedures to make rapid (ID Now) testing available to any resident on request. Previously, rapid testing was only available from ECDOH for individuals with COVID-19 symptoms or those with a known exposure.

Town accountant files defamation suit against councilman

On Jan. 28, Pamela Barton, the Town of Grand Island's senior accountant, filed a lawsuit against Town Councilman Mike Madigan and the Town of Grand Island, alleging Madigan placed a defamatory article in the Sept. 17, 2021, issue of the Island Dispatch. Statements in the article, she alleges, "have no basis in fact" and were "made with actual malice in disregard to plaintiff." She also alleges Madigan made defamatory comments during a Town Board workshop session on Sept. 7, 2021, and Sept. 20, 2021.
