Hochul directs DEC to expand drought watch

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to issue an updated drought watch after consulting with the State Drought Management Task Force and federal partner agencies.
WEDI awarded $925,000 for West Side Bazaar expansion

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced Westminster Economic Development Initiative will receive $925,000 for its planned move and expansion of the West Side Bazaar. WEDI has been raising capital campaign funds for building the new bazaar since March 2021.

On Saturday, the Buffalo Museum of Science held a live ice sculpting of a larger-than-life cryolophosaurus head at Churn Soft Serve & Coffee. The collaboration came as a recognition of the "Antarctic Dinosaurs: The Exhibition" experience nearing its final days at the museum.
Statewide effort to prevent speeding

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced law enforcement agencies throughout New York state will be increasing patrols to target speeding from Aug. 14-21. Speed Awareness Week is a high-visibility enforcement campaign supported by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee to stop speeding and prevent avoidable crashes caused by unsafe speed.

Terry and Dori Klaaren were exploring Morocco after having traveled through Europe for approximately eight months. They were a young couple in the early 1970s, and Dori had suggested the trip, explaining that it would be a good time to do it " 'Because we're free; because we've got no careers. We have no kids, no debts. We will never be this free again for the rest of our lives. We need to travel,' " Terry said to a group at the Grand Island Memorial Library, where he spoke about Dori's artwork on Aug. 1.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn is issuing a warning about a reported scam that recently victimized a resident in the Town of Lancaster. Perpetrators commit this crime, commonly known as the "grandparent scam," by using various tactics to emotionally manipulate their victims in order to fraudulently obtain money while hiding their true identity.

Woodlawn Beach State Park wetland restoration project slated for fall

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a wetland restoration project will begin at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie County this fall. The $1.6 million project is being funded through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Ecotour highlights diversity of species in Niagara River Corridor

A wind blew across the water at Beaver Island State Park at 7 a.m., July 30. I stepped into a kayak for the first ecotour of the 2022 Paddles Up event at the park's beach and was pushed off. The water was slightly choppy as the group of kayakers, led by retired government biologist Paul Leuchner, started to travel in the river, heading around the island.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced federal funding totaling $1,640,522 for Erie County Medical Center. Funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the award reimburses the medical center for personal protective equipment and supplies needed to treat and prevent the spread of coronavirus, as well as contract services used to support hospital functions during the pandemic.

Hochul announces rollout of electric and gas utility bill credits for low-income families

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the vast majority of $567 million dedicated to help low-income electric and gas utility customers pay off past utility bills will be reflected on customers' August bills. The financial assistance program includes an estimated $557 million statewide COVID-19 bill credit program for low-income customers adopted by the New York State Public Service Commission.

The Erie County Department of Health and Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force have expanded a campaign to distribute harm reduction materials and supplies. ECDOH has contacted restaurants and bars, starting in the City of Buffalo, to offer Narcan kits and branded materials with harm reduction messages at no cost. Outreach to the rest of Erie County will continue this summer.
Niagara University's Merani Scholarship awarded to Mount St. Mary Academy senior Sheila Strott

Sheila Strott, an incoming freshman in Niagara University's College of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management, is the 2022 recipient of the Merani scholarship, a collaboration between Niagara and the Merani Hotel Group to provide opportunities for high-level experiential learning in the hospitality industry. Strott, a Grand Island resident who graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in June, will receive a four-year, $30,000 scholarship, and three paid rotating internships at Merani properties.
