Hardwick requests soil study in areas affected by Tonawanda Coke

Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick has called on the Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct soil tests in areas near the Tonawanda Coke plant. Tonawanda Coke was recently found guilty of polluting the air and now focus has turned to what impact the facility's operations has had on the soil.

The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce will host the 17th annual KidBiz Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Town Commons.

KidBiz will give young entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn various aspects of running a business. Topics such as pricing, marketing and customer service were covered at a training event.

Chief Kevin Koch notes that summer-like weather has caused a dramatic increase in highway use by motorcycles, bicyclists, rollerbladers, joggers, etc. Also, in a few short weeks, hundreds of Island youngsters will finish their school year, adding to burdensome traffic hazards at times.

Hoffspice tees off June 17

Islander Justin Hoffman and Hospice Buffalo have joined for two Hoffspice fundraisers, one set for Sept. 14 at the Grand Island VFW that will include food and entertainment. The second is the upcoming Hoffspice Golf Classic on Monday, June 17, at the River Oaks Golf Club, 201 Whitehaven Road, beginning at 2 p.m. Admission to the event is $120, with all proceeds to support Hospice Buffalo.

The golf event will include 18 holes of golf with a cart (a four-man scramble format), lunch, dinner, a long drive contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a 50/50 split raffle and a Chinese auction.

Updated in summer 2012, the now nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Ramsey on DVD followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing.

Gold Star Mothers Shirley Luther and Mary Ann Crowe will be honored, the Roll will be called, the Honor Guard will give a gun salute and a wreath will be placed at the monument in the park.
