Town Board passes bond resolution for road reconstruction

The Grand Island Town Board Monday night passed a $750,000 bond resolution to fund reconstruction and improvements to various town roads. The resolution, sponsored by Michael Madigan and seconded by Tom Digati, passed unanimously. Councilmember Peter Marston was an excused absence.
Mask requirement reinstated at Grand Island Library

ECDOH provides COVID-19 data update

The Erie County Department of Health is providing an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending July 31, ECDOH received reports for 535 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents; this is an 80% increase from the previous week's total of 297 cases, and a 10-fold increase in the past six weeks.
With 496 new COVID-19 cases in past 7 days, Erie County experiencing 'substantial' transmission

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed 99 new COVID-19 cases for July 29, resulting in 496 new COVID-19 cases within the past seven days. Based on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicators for community transmission, Erie County is now considered to have "substantial" COVID-19 transmission, with a case rate of 54 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
Rabies vaccine distribution by air and on ground planned for Erie County

In coordination with the New York State Department of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services, the Erie County Department of Health will participate in a wildlife vaccination program for rabies using aircraft and on-the-ground deliver to distribute bait.

The soaking rainfall, the blustery winds, and even a tornado warning on July 17 changed Relay For Life, but the event went on as scheduled. The changes included the cancellation of the car show and the fire performance. Survivors were still offered free meals, the basket raffle attracted a crowd, the wheel of chance still spun, and people purchased tickets for the 50-50 raffle.

Relay For Life to hold two-day event on Grand Island

Relay For Life is back after a one-year hiatus as a two-day event. From 3-7 p.m. Saturday, a hybrid Relay event will be held at the Fuccillo Toyota dealership parking lot. The traditional luminaria ceremony will be offered at 9:15 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Park. In addition to the luminaria ceremony, a newly installed memorial garden at Veterans Park will be dedicated to the late Mary Dunbar-Daluisio, who, for many years, served as co-chair of Relay For Life.

Vandalism at Erie County's Emery Park causes event cancellations, leaves $31,000 in damages

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry on Wednesday reported an incident of vandalism that took place at Emery Park early in the week of June 28 and resulted in "considerable damage" to the park's ski lodge and fieldhouse, each of which was broken into after outside security doors were kicked in and forced open. In addition to the doors of each building being damaged beyond repair, vandals gathered up all the fire extinguishers from the two buildings and discharged them in the ski lodge, causing further damage.
