At an Oct. 19 workshop meeting, the Grand Island Town Board voted to set a public hearing for the 2023 town budget for 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7. In addition, the next steps to enacting a local law to breach the tax cap will occur at the same Town Board meeting.

The annual Citizen of the Year Awards dinner, held Oct. 13 at the DoubleTree by Hilton at Niagara Falls, was a success, said Grand Island Chamber of Commerce President Eric Fiebelkorn. "The dinner was well attended and was very successful. The honorees this year were fantastic and made the program worthwhile and the success it was."

Seven years ago, several local veterans and town officials met in the Grand Island Moose Lodge to discuss developing a vacant lot. Located in the center of town, at the corners of Grand Island Boulevard and Baseline Road, they sought to build a memorial site for hometown hero and U.S. Army soldier Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper - and all town veterans of the armed forces.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Tuesday announced a jury found 63-year-old John M. Sauberan of Buffalo guilty of one count of murder in the second degree (class "A-I" felony). Jurors rendered a decision in the afternoon after three hours of deliberation following a five-day trial, convicting the defendant of the only charge in the indictment against him.

Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is awarded through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Community Food Projects Grant program. The Grand Island Town Board has set a public hearing to discuss the tax cap for 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in Grand Island Town Hall. In addition, the Town Board has scheduled two workshop meetings to be held to discuss the 2023 town budget. These meetings will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 11:15 a.m. Oct. 19.

The Grand Island Golden Age Center, at 3278 Whitehaven Road, will host a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The clinic is "a community event that's open to the public right here on Grand Island," explained Jen Menter, recreation supervisor of the center. The flu shots will be administered by Walgreen's employees.
