Sea lamprey control planned for Lake Erie tributaries

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel will apply lampricides to Cattaraugus Creek in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Erie counties to kill sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom. The applications will be conducted between May 10-19, in accordance with state of New York permits. Applications will be complete in about five days. Application dates are tentative and may change based upon local weather or stream conditions near the time of treatment.

Residents to celebrate Earth Day with 'Clean UP' Grand Island

Community members are welcome to participate in the town's second annual Islandwide "Clean UP," scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon on April 23. Highway Superintendent Richard Crawford said individuals, families and other groups are welcome to participate in Grand Island's celebration of Earth Day. The event is being organized by a partnership, which includes the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Niagara River Greenway Commission.
Grand Island Town Board sets May public hearings

The Grand Island Town Board set a number of public hearings for upcoming meetings at its April 18 Grand Island Town Board meeting. These include public hearings on preliminary plat approvals for five sections of the Southpointe development, which is bordered by Staley Road to the north, Love Road to the south, Baseline Road to the west and the I-190/South State Parkway to the east on Grand Island.

'High' COVID-19 community level prompts additional safety recommendations from Erie County Department of Health

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Erie County meets the indicators for a "high" coronavirus level. This level is based on the number of new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over seven days, new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population (seven-day total), and percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients (seven-day average).
Adjustment in COVID-19 transmission rate will not result in additional mandates for town, schools

Island Ship Center celebrates 16 years in business

The Island Ship Center began with "a dream and a storage unit and fax service" on Baseline Road sixteen years ago, said Fahim Mojawalla, who co-owns the business with his wife, Seema. In 2016, the business moved to its present location on Whitehaven Road, where it began changing and growing.

At the Grand Island Central School District Board of Education meeting on that date, Dr. Rubie Harris, assistant superintendent of budget and finance, said, "We're confident that the aid that was allocated in the January funds is what we will receive. We'll be blessed if we receive more than that. We don't expect it to be less."
