Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh joined staff from the Niagara County Parks Department to plant a tree in Oppenheim Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The Parks Department will be planting more than 200 trees this season through a forest restoration grant that is part of the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The Erie Canal Discovery Center, the museum and orientation center adjacent to the historic Lockport locks, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, from May 1 through Oct. 31.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.

In August 2013, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees put into action an idea he had for some time. A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

Destination Niagara USA is set to host a group of top outdoor media professionals for the Greater Niagara Spring Outdoor Media event, May 1-6. This popular event has been held for more than two decades, and highlights the fisheries of Lake Erie, the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Anglers will target species including smallmouth bass, walleye, trout and salmon using a variety of fishing methods.

Melissa L. Dunlap, executive director of the Niagara History Center (Niagara County Historical Society) in Lockport, was presented with the Museum Association of New York's Individual Achievement Award at a conference in Corning. The honor was in recognition of Dunlap's 32 years of accomplishments at the Niagara Street museum, 28 of which she has served as executive director.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the fishing season for northern pike, pickerel, tiger muskellunge and walleye opens on May 1. Fishing regulation changes implemented earlier this year replaced the floating "Saturday" season openers with a fixed date, in addition to other improvements to enhance fishing opportunities across the state.

The New York State Department of Transportation advised motorists the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard (U.S. Route 62) at Erie Avenue and Shawnee Road (State Route 425) in the City of North Tonawanda will be closed to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, May 9. The closure is necessary to facilitate repairs to the railroad crossing by CSX, and is expected to last three days - weather permitting.
