Thunder on the Niagara returns to Gratwick Park

The Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association and Hydroplane Racing League of Canada is pleased to announce this year's boat racing event. Thunder on the Niagara returns to Gratwick Park, North Tonawanda, on Aug. 6-7. The major sponsor for the sixth year is Snyder Industries Inc.
'Touch-A-Truck,' family events at Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA

Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is partnering with the Town of Niagara to host its "Touch-A-Truck" event where children and their families are invited to the shopping center's front parking lot to view local first responder vehicles firsthand. The event is slated for 1-4 p.m. Saturday. It is free and open to the public.
Niagara County Department of Health hosts KidFest family health fair

The Niagara County Department of Health and the Town of Newfane will host KidFest, a family health fair, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Krull Park. The event will feature free activities for children and families, including lawn and garden games, Zumba, STEM and reading/literacy.
Niagara County to hold public meetings on new Rural Transportation bus routes

Niagara County will host two public meetings next week on proposed route changes to its Rural Transportation bus service, which is being renamed "Connect Niagara." The meetings will be Aug. 2 in Lockport and Aug. 4 in Niagara Falls.
NCSO: Industrial accident in Wheatfield

On Wednesday, just before 2 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call regarding a hazardous material incident at the Avantor building in the Town of Wheatfield. The caller reported a spill of approximately 400 gallons of methanol contained inside the building.
Monkeypox detected in Niagara County resident

State Parks Standing Committee to meet for projects approval

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Niagara River Greenway Fund Standing Committee will hold a meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, to vote on funding for a project being proposed by State Parks. The meeting will be held at in the DeVeaux Woods State Park Castellani Building and is open to the public.

The Kupiec family, along with ConnectLife and the Gratwick Hose Volunteer Fire Co., will host a community blood drive honoring the memory of North Tonawanda native Brandon Kupiec. Brandon died unexpectedly in 2013 at age 20. His family holds this yearly event in his honor.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office K9 Atom has received a bullet- and stab-proof protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K9 Atom's vest was embroidered with the sentiment "In memory of K9 Relic, Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ, EOW 2/3/22."
State Parks holds lifeguard qualifier

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced there will be lifeguard qualifier for position in the Niagara Region of State Parks. Testing - required for anyone wishing to work as a lifeguard at a state park - will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Hamburg High School, 4111 Legion Drive.

The Niagara County Department of Health will offer free COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older at upcoming clinics. Children ages 6 months to 4 years old may receive the Pfizer vaccine, while children ages 6 months to 5 years old can receive the Moderna vaccine.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Niagara County announced its recent enrollment in the Niagara County "Thank A Vet" program. CCE Niagara will offer free admission to the Niagara County Fair on Sunday, Aug. 7, to any current member of the military, or veteran, as part of the "Thank A Vet" program. First responders will also be admitted to the fair for free that day.

The new disc golf course that opened at the beginning of summer in Royalton Ravine Park appears to be a huge hit with Niagara County residents, according to Niagara County Legislator Mike Hill. This is the second disc course opened by Niagara County Parks, with the original located in Burmaster Park at Bond Lake.

"Serving Christ and Community since 1922" is the theme of the Bacon Memorial Presbyterian Church 100th anniversary celebration event to be held Saturday, July 23, for membership and friends from the community. The church opened in 1922 and continues to serve at that very same location today. The land for the church was part of a fruit tree farm and was donated by the family of the late Jonathan Bowen.

Completion of $3.5 million supportive housing development in North Tonawanda

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of a $3.5 million supportive housing project in downtown North Tonawanda. Supported through the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, the adaptive reuse of the structure, at 49 Tremont St., created 12 units of affordable housing, including eight studio apartments with on-site supportive services to help women who have experienced homelessness and are survivors of domestic violence.

Niagara Falls Police Department investigating Pine Avenue homicide

At 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the 900 block of Pine Avenue for a report of a person down. Upon arrival, officers located a 22-year-old man from Buffalo on the street and suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers initiated aid until Niagara Falls Fire Department and AMR arrived, at which time the victim was pronounced deceased.
