Memorial receives $200,000 from Highmark to support mothers & babies

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has been awarded a $200,000 Blue Fund grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York to support the first community-based doula program in Niagara Falls.

A special youth-only pheasant hunting weekend will be held in Western New York on Oct. 8-9, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced. The youth-only pheasant hunting weekend helps acclimate junior hunters to upland game bird hunting when fewer hunters are afield, and to learn safe hunting values and skills from experienced hunters.
Niagara County announces four upcoming civil service exams

Niagara County Personnel Officer Malcolm Needler announced the application deadlines for four upcoming civil service exams - caseworker, clerical II, correction officer and social worker - are fast approaching, and encouraged those who are interested to sign up now for the exams. The application deadline for all four exams is Oct. 28. The respective tests will be given Dec. 10.

Catholic Health resumes expanded hospital visitation hours

Catholic Health is expanding its hospital visiting hours. Patients may have up to two visitors at a time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Sisters of Charity Hospital (Main Street and St. Joseph campuses). Visitation beyond normal hours continues to be permitted under certain conditions.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced Saturday, Sept. 24, is a "Free Fishing Day" in New York state. This free freshwater fishing day is one of six held annually. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is celebrated to promote outdoor activities that are significant contributors to New York's economy and help support fish and wildlife conservation.

Peter Jablonski, an avid "privy digger" and historical researcher, and David Potter, a lifelong collector of historic stoneware, will present a program titled "History & Mystery of the Early Decorated Stoneware Potteries of the Queen City, 1834-1896."
