The Niagara County Legislature passed a resolution at their meeting Tuesday night opposed to National Grid's efforts to increase electric rates on its customers. The legislature called on Gov. Kathy Hochul to reject National Grid's plans, and filed comments opposed to the rate hike with the New York State Department of Public Service.

When retired City of Buffalo firefighter Gary Schultz saw that the Lackawanna Fire Department was auctioning off an old ladder firetruck, he could not let it go to scrap. His bid won and he decided to take the vehicle and turn it into a memorial for his fellow firefighters, EMS personnel and U.S. veterans. His plan is to ride it in parades to thank first responders and our armed services for what they do for their communities and our country.

On Feb. 4, West Street Elementary School held a fundraiser for the American Red Cross disaster relief fund to help victims of the tornadoes in Florida and the widespread fires in California. Children were asked to donate a dollar to enter a coloring contest and, if at least $200 was raised, then Principal Mr. Mong would have to kiss a goat (this year's leadership theme is country/farm).

It's tax season, and accounting students from Niagara University's Holzschuh College of Business Administration and members of its accounting society and Beta Alpha Psi will again provide members of the Niagara Falls community free tax preparation assistance through the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income families, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited English proficiency.
