The Niagara Wheatfield Board of Education Meeting to be held Jan. 17 will begin at 6 p.m. with an anticipated executive session. The public meeting is anticipated to begin at 7 p.m. in the Niagara Wheatfield High School Adult Learning Center, 2292 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn.

EPA: Allied Waste resolves clean air act violations at its Niagara Falls landfill

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reached a settlement with Allied Waste Niagara Falls Landfill LLC (Allied) for violating the federal Clean Air Act at its landfill in Niagara Falls. Under the proposed settlement, Allied will pay a $671,000 penalty and operate a gas collection and control system to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals, primarily methane, as well as other harmful organic compounds, released into the air.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Niagara River Greenway Standing Committee has announced its meeting dates for 2024: Feb. 14, April 10, June 12 and Sept. 11. Meetings will all be held as needed at 11 a.m. at DeVeaux Woods State Park, 3160 DeVeaux Woods Drive, Niagara Falls.
Residential house fire in Town of Cambria

On Jan. 8, at approximately 7:33 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communication center received a 911 call reporting a possible house fire at 3824 N. Ridge Road. Personnel and equipment from the Cambria Volunteer Fire Co. arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire on the second floor of the residence.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital (MSMH) announced its Center for Sports Medicine & Physical Rehabilitation, now located at 1 Columba Drive No. 5 in Niagara Falls, will be moving on Jan. 15. The new department will relocate to the campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital, 5300 Military Road, Lewiston, with the services located at the hospital's north lobby entrance.
Catholic Health offers free lung cancer screening at multiple sites throughout Western New York

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the U.S. Since lung tissue has no nerves, people often do not experience pain or symptoms until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. However, if lung cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, the cure rate can be as high as 92%. That's why adults who are at high risk for lung cancer should undergo an annual lung cancer screening, which includes a low-dose CT scan.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced the birth of Niagara County's first baby of 2024. Newborn Ella Jane Williams arrived at 12:56 p.m. Jan. 2, measuring 19 inches and weighing 6 lbs. 11 oz. The healthy baby is the daughter of Lindsey Tompkins and Ricky Williams of Niagara Falls.
