Village of Lewiston to use fund balance to pay for unexpected cost associated with DPW garage addition

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Monday voted unanimously to use general fund reserve monies to pay for what was described as "unforeseen conditions" and "contingency costs" occurring with the Department of Public Works garage additions.

A dedication ceremony took place Sunday in the Oakwood section of the historic Lewiston Village Cemetery behind First Presbyterian Church. Two granite benches were recently added to the garden and surround the potter's field plaque.

National expert Dr. Jaclyn Schildkraut will share promising ways shareholders can take an active role in helping to prevent mass shootings in their communities on Friday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. in the Russell Salvatore Dining Commons on the Niagara University campus. The presentation, "Are Mass Shootings Preventable? Lessons Learned from Previous Tragedies," is free and open to the public.

Niagara County student internship program begins Sept. 19

The Niagara County Legislature internship program is set to begin Sept. 19, and there are still some openings available for students who attend any Niagara County high schools. The program, run by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (CCE-Niagara), goes from September to February and is a commitment of about two evenings a month.

As part of the National Federation of Just Communities national conference in Buffalo this week, members on Wednesday took a daytrip to Lewiston. Their tour bus stopped at the Freedom Crossing Monument on Water Street, and they were greeted by Sally and Josiah Tryon (aka Eva Nicklas and Tim Henderson). The two Lewiston legends recounted tales of first coming to the village, efforts to lead people to freedom, and the story behind Susan Geissler's famed bronze statue.
Francis Center meat & basket raffles to benefit community programs
