The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a public meeting will kick off the scoping process for phase three of the removal of the Niagara Scenic Parkway, between Findlay Drive in the City of Niagara Falls and Center Street in the Village of Lewiston.
Niagara University accounting students offering free tax preparation help

Accounting students from Niagara University's Holzschuh College of Business Administration and members of its Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi will again provide members of the Niagara Falls community free tax preparation assistance through the Internal Revenue Service's volunteer income tax assistance program, which offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income families, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited English proficiency.
UPDATE: Cab driver robbery in Niagara Falls

Shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the 1700 block of Falls Street for a report of the robbery of a cab driver. The 36-year-old driver stated that, after picking up a customer and driving him to the 1700 block of Falls Street, the customer attempted to rob the cab driver.

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced William C. Giambelluca, age 43, entered a plea in County Court to the crime of criminally negligent homicide in the death of 72-year-old Judith Schultz of Barker.
Tour bus fire in Falls

This morning at 2:50 a.m., an officer responded to the 400 block of Second Street in Niagara Falls for a reported vehicle fire. As the officer arrived, the Niagara Falls Fire Department arrived simultaneously and discovered a Vanhool tour bus, with a Massachusetts registration, engulfed in flames.

The Niagara County Department of Health nursing division, in collaboration with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, is offering a free diabetes prevention program. This is a 16-week program for people who are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Classes are scheduled in 16 consecutive weekly sessions, then bimonthly for three months and once a month for five months.

The Village of Lewiston Board voted Tuesday to rescind prior approval given to the Historical Association of Lewiston to close Center Street on April 8 for an eclipse viewing event. Trustees Tina Coppins and Dan Gibson voted "no," preferring the roadway remain available to HAL for reenactment programming that had been billed, "The Eclipse: A Step Back in Time."

Mother Cabrini Health Foundation awards $2.125M to Catholic Health to support emergency services, community outreach

Catholic Health has received two grants from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation totaling $2,125,000. The larger of the two grants - $2,000,000 - will help fund two new CT scanners for Mercy Hospital of Buffalo's busy emergency department (ED), which serves nearly 25,000 patients each year. The remaining $125,000 will support ongoing medical outreach to Buffalo's westside community.

Seaman announces murder conviction

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced that Shaquan Gibson, age 49, of Niagara Falls, was sentenced to a combined 65 years to life, the maximum possible sentence, for his conviction of the murder of 24-year-old Cyjear Betton in May of 2022, in Niagara Falls, and related crimes.
