As part of an Earth Day celebration, Jessica Lemke's pre-K class at St. Peter R.C. School had to create something using recycled materials. Their creativity was notable, as seen in everything from guitars, castles and robots, to telescopes, pirate ships and more.
Democrats out of Lewiston election; Symmonds vows to continue run for mayor

In a shocking turn of events Wednesday, the Lewiston Democratic Party candidates appointed to run in the June 17 Village of Lewiston election were ruled ineligible. Village Clerk Anne Welch disqualified mayoral candidate Jamie Symmonds and trustee candidate Jacqueline Lampman on the grounds their party failed to adhere to state election law.

Section 15-108(2)(c) states "Notice must be filed in the offices of the village clerk and the county board of elections at least 10 days before the scheduled caucus."

Welch said she did not receive notice from the Democrats of their caucus, which was held Tuesday, nor was a public announcement posted in her office.

Village of Lewiston: Dems get their candidate in Symmonds

For the first time in 20 years, Village of Lewiston Democrats have a candidate for mayor.

Jamie Symmonds will represent the party in the June 17 election. She was nominated during Tuesday's Democratic Party caucus.

Rivershore Inc. has announced a new and unique 5K running event to be held in the Village of Lewiston Saturday, May 3. The Rivershore 5K will be held annually on the first Saturday of May to coincide with the Lewiston Smelt Festival, and will be the first of 10 runs in the DiMino Lower Niagara Running Series.

The event, professionally managed by Race Management Solution, seeks to support Rivershore programs while promoting the historic Village of Lewiston.

This one-of-a-kind running experience will start and finish on Lewiston Landing in front of the Barton Hill Hotel (start time 11 a.m.). Runners will experience the most challenging incline in Lewiston.

Business partners Clark, of Niagara Falls, and Lewiston's Tony Vescio plan to open Big Guys Pizzeria and More early next month in the addition next to Hibbard's Original Frozen Custard on Portage Road. The eatery's name comes from its signature pie, a 28-inch pizza affectionately called "The Big Guy."

On May 4, OFN will offer free family admission to all firefighters, ambulance and law enforcement personnel. NY Power Authority 2013 annual report highlights financial strength

The New York Power Authority on Monday issued its 2013 annual report, combining a summary of the past year's accomplishments with updates on its sustainability activities in one comprehensive publication.

At the same time as the issuance of its annual report, NYPA also released an overview of its financial performance during the past three years, which can be viewed at http://www.nypa.gov/AR13/ar13-Financials.pdf. Both documents demonstrate how prudent management practices place NYPA in a strong financial position to implement its 2014-19 strategic vision, announced last month, and available at www.nypa.gov/PDFs/StraVis2014/.
